Editorial Reviews

Review

“Readers won’t care whether it’s about letters or numbers - they will be too busy poring over the artwork and laughing.” (Kirkus Reviews (starred review))

“While not for children just learning numbers or the alphabet, this offering will provide a fun way for those a bit older to review both.” (School Library Journal)

“Boldt’s illustrations have a dimensional, painterly quality that recalls Adam Rex’s work, and the absurd scenarios, strong-willed personalities, and visual gags will have kids laughing from A to 26.” (Publishers Weekly)

From the Back Cover

Welcome to this book about Numbers!

Welcome to this book about Letters!

Wait. . . .

What?!

Numbers and Letters both want to be the stars of this book! And when one alligator (that starts with an A!) and two bears (2 of them!) and three cars (1, 2, 3! A, B, C!) begin to show up, the havoc that ensues is as joyous a romp as a counting book . . . that is, an ABC book . . . has ever been. With vivid illustrations from author-illustrator Mike Boldt, this fresh and funny picture book plays with numbers and letters in the most imaginative way.

This is definitely a book for animated out loud reading. It's fun and will be even more fun if your child can read one part and you the other. Letters A-Z and numbers 1-26 and maybe a re-read with colors! Oh the learning possibilities.

Thanks to HC.

Great for a preschooler learning to count and the alphabet! Lots of things to count and simple phonics, first letter sounds. Enough visual variety to hold the kids interest without becoming a distraction.

Let’s face it, number and letter books have been done over and over again and there are a lot of choices out there. So in order to rank among my favorites, they have to be unique. Mike Boldt nailed unique and made 123 AND ABC stars of this funny and entertaining book. His illustrations are colorful and lively. The expressions on the faces of the numbers and letters add such personality. I love the way he used blue to denote number-related text and orange to denote letter-related text. So clever! Bottom line…I double-love this book and I think you will, too!

This has been a very enlightening book for my four year old - it is a very clever method for teaching the alphabet simultaneously with counting. The illustrations are fantastic and he loves to check to see that all the items are counted correctly. This book belongs in every child's library.

Great way to learn numbers and letters in a fun, silly way! Interesting illustrations keep the kids engaged and wanting to count the items! We especially like the wolves with the xylophones and geese with the ice cream cones!

Four year old doesn't like typical letter/number books that are obvious about teaching. This book disguises in a fun and comedic way. And I enjoy reading it to him even after the 3rd time in a row.

Read this to my 5-yr-old just starting kindergarten. I thought it was a cute story. Not sure she quite understood (yet) about the connection between the numbers and letters but she will.

Lots of great reviews but I was expecting it to be a little less confusing. Just a lot of letters and number scenarios on each for a toddler. Maybe it will be better when she gets older.
