Well I read the reviews and was excited to get this resource for my students this year. I must say that I was disappointed that the author chose paintings with nudes to represent a few of the Artists. The sad part was that it wasn't necessary for those Artists to be represented by those works and I had to censor the book for my students. I would hear from the parents for sure - if I hadn't. In this sexually charged culture we are in - you have to be so careful at school. I never read a review that caution was necessary before bringing this book into the classroom. Live and learn. So I am writing a review to warn other Elementary Art teachers that you will have to "edit" this before allowing your students to see this book about Amazing Artists of our past.

My daughter wanted an art book to help her finish a Girl Scout badge and this one looked pretty good. It is a nice introduction to many different artists and their styles. I like that it not only has beautiful pictures of artwork, but also a nice discussion of each artist. I think this book is a great primer for any kid (from elementary school even up to high school) wanting to learn more about art.

First off, I bought this for art lessons for my homeschooled son. I feel it's important for kids to have a background in very basic art. We watch a lot of Little Einsteins and that has helped get him interested in major artists. This book has several familiar paintings from the show and that will be neat for him to see.

However...for those of you who don't want your children seeing nudity, beware. There are a few paintings with "exposed parts". I'm not a prude, but my 5 year old doesn't need to see these. Luckily, there are enough other paintings that I can skip these pages and he shouldn't notice.

The actual book is well made and arranged. Each artist has a time line of things that happened during their life and lots of personal information about the artist. There are several examples of each artists most famous works. There are suggestions for further research and a glossary with important words.

Here's who's covered in the book: da Vinci, Vermeer, Monet, Rousseau, Cassatt, van Gogh, Matisse, Paul Klee, Franz Marc, Picasso, Chagall, Kahlo and Warhol.

I'm kinda thinking about taking it when we're done and making a mosaic out of the paintings in the book for his room.

I initially bought this book for my son after noticing his intense interest for paintings displayed at the Getty Museum. While he still has to become attracted to some artists (not a fan of Van Gogh, surprisingly:), he was nevertheless very pleased with this book and likes to go back to it over and over again. This book can be used as a good introduction to classical painting for kids ages 4-6 and is a great "guide book" if you want to know a little bit more about certain paintings displayed at the Met and National Gallery of Arts in DC.

Overall, very good quality, age appropriate text, which allows to generate discussion and ask questions about each painting. I would encourage preschool art teachers and interested parents to purchase this book and use it while teaching basic art to young children.

This book is so wonderful, I went back and bought another copy to add to our local elementary school library. This book introduces famous artists in an easy-to-understand way for elementary-age children. Artists included in this book: Leonardo da Vinci, Jan Vermeer, Claude Monet, Henri Rousseau, Mary Cassatt, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Franz Marc, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Frida Kahlo, and Andy Warhol.

This book is better for Pre-teens or Young teens. I bought it for my younger children (ages 4 and 6), but the art and the descriptions do not appeal to them nearly as well as the art and descriptions in Sister Wendy Beckett's "A Child's Book of Prayer in Art."

Although some entering their teens would appreciate these books, kindly 'show and tell' these to young children as well, even if they must grow into them. The entire series is a small but wonderful doorway to the world of art. Don't you just love opening doorways to new places?
