5.0 out of 5 stars Even without Lionel Richie, this group still kicks butt, February 13, 2008
This review is from: 13 (Audio Cassette)
After scoring several sensuous slow jams and rough, tough funk anthems that stand as some of the best such music of the late 70s/early 80s, Commodores frontman Lionel Richie decided to leave the group to embark on what would prove to be a brilliantly successful solo career. Though some people were likely saddened by this loss, the group was determined to carry on. Group member Walter Orange assumed most of the lead vocal duties, and while he doesn't have the nothing-else-like-it voice of Lionel Richie, it's nonetheless a very strong voice with loads of gritty, energetic passion. The funk-dance number "Touchdown" has a distinctively 80s feel to it, and is a fabulous example of a group that was at its greatest peak the previous decade not losing its touch in later years. "Ooh, Woman You" is also irresistibly catchy.
