book of revelation,
By Steven Prospero "Prospero" (Craggy Island, The West, Ireland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 13 Songs (Audio CD)
This is a revelation of an amazing talent let loose with the freedoms that come with a self-produced debut. Julie Feeney wrote the lyrics, composed the melodies and played most of the instruments. For her troubles, she won the Choice music award and came up with a great debut album that really belongs in the company of Tapestry, The Kick Inside, Jagged Little Pill, Little Earthquakes, Felt Mountain and even Exile in Guyville.
Arrangements are sparse and unconventional, but this gets into your head with charming melodies, thoughtful lyrics, great harmonies and occasional, tasteful use of clever vocal gymnastics (not precision pitch shifting in the Mariah Carey way, but more rhythmically, like the Irish style of Sean Nos. Turns out she has produced 3 volumes of CD Roms for teaching music in Irish schools). The songs seem to be autobigraphical, and go through the ups and downs and sidewayses of life and relationships with all the emotions in between. Legend has it that this was recorded in a garage belonging to a member of Def Leppard. Standout tracks are "Ficticious Richard" (reminiscent of Kate Bush's "The Man With the Child in his Eye" and it has a brilliant video) "Aching" (holding its emotion throughout massively held long notes), "You Broke the Magic" and "Wind out of my Sails" (with an airy, floaty vocal) and "Autopilot" (with its catchy skipping-song harmonies). Likely to be enjoyed by fans of Goldfrapp, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Bjork, Imogen Heap, Real World, Stravinsky and Samuel Barber.
