Book Description

January 1, 1995
Fiction. Warning: If you are not quite certain that you can follow these directions accurately, do not attempt to begin. Thirteen short works in an arrangement from the profane to the elevated. "There have been few precedents to this kind of sustained avant-garde literature with a moving human content"--Charles Shere, The Oakland Tribune.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Almost the only living writer I can read. . . . The more I read it the better it gets. A wonderful piece of art and a great achievement. -- Robert Ashley, Composer, 1995

Gothic. Symbolic. Surreal. Extension of the female. It feels complete. -- James D. Houston, Novelist, 1995

Transcendence can be achieved in a double bed more truly than in a cell. The writing in 13 is lovely, gifted. This is transcendence. -- Dorothea Tanning, Painter, 1995

About the Author

Melody Sumner Carnahans published books include The Form: 1970-1979, In the Presence of My Enemies, 13 Stories, and as coeditor, the anthology The Guests Go In To Supper. She received an MFA in writing from Mills College in 1982 where she began working with musicians and composers. Audio-compositions based on her stories have been performed and broadcast internationally, many of which are included in The Time Is Now compact disc. Carnahan received commissions from Experimental Intermedia Foundation and New American Radio, and her writing has appeared in periodicals such as the City Lights Review and the San Francisco Chronicle. She was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and since 1989 has lived in New Mexico.

Sumner Carnahan is also the author of The Time Is Now. That is the books short title. The full title of her first book is: The time is now. It is the year of the simple message. The style is imitation, the technique to cheat. The world has abandoned the lion eagle ox in favor of the 30 second spot. There are no presents for children, everything is obvious, envy has erased all sympathetic response. Fire burns on unencumbered by water, uninspired by air. This is a description of mediocrity. There is more headroom but ones feet are forced into slippers of steel. Pride holds the multitudes in a continual, habitual process of readornment. The sun sets and rises without saturation of the senses, rises and sets without redemption of the soul. Approaching the azimuth now the sun condenses its message to opposites, there will be good fortune, there will be evil.
