4.0 out of 5 stars An Expression Of Pain, May 20, 2001
By
Kolors "Jimmy" (Pocatello, Idaho) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 13 Ways To Bleed Onstage (Audio CD)
Cold falls under what I call a depression band. A depression band with the likes of Staind, Korn, NIN, and ect. Cold is a definate band that uses it's music to express one's inner most demons. Through the lyrics, frontman vocalist Scooter expresses a variety of painful emotions dealing with the likes of love and lonliness. The title of this record proves my point exactly. "13 Ways To Bleed On Stage" deals with the letting out emotions on stage, preforming music. With deeply personal lyrics, combined with creepy guitar work, and less dominant drumming, Cold easily has worked their way into the minds of dark music lovers everywhere, as well as the radio. The first song on the album "Just Got Wicked" is probably the heaviest song on the album and was a perfect first single. Following it is the emotionally charged melody "She Said" which is a song dealing a past relationship gone wrong. Next is the lonly song "No One" dealing with emotional isolation, which is recently playing across hard rock/alternative stations everywhere. Also on the record we have beautiful songs like "Confession", "Same Drug", and "Sick Of Man." The album closes with the beautifully painful acoustic track "Bleed", which features Aaron Lewis of Staind on backing vocals. Definatly pick this album up. Well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW Absolutely Amazing, December 22, 2000
By
Doesn't Matter (New York City, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 13 Ways To Bleed Onstage (Audio CD)
I don't think it is too often that an album can grab you completely by surprise by just how good it is. This one did. I am not even quite sure why I bought this album, possibly just curiosity. I'm really not sure what I was expecting when I got my hands on this record but whatever my expectations were, they were completely blown out of the water. This is one of the most incredible albums I've ever heard. It's a bit difficult for me to even describe the music. Something like Staind meets Godsmack. The songs can be very hard driving and intense and they can also be very soft and quite simply beautiful. For me this album actually caused a great deal of introspection. And I think they were able to do that without being pompous. Simply put, they aren't full of themselves. They just create some of the most incredible music I've ever heard with lyrics that are simple, and yet amazingly powerful. The album actually has a very dark and moody tone to it, something that I would almost expect from a band like The Cure. While the mood may be that dark, but the music is actually completely different, much more metal than bands like that. Like I said, the bands overall sound is a lot like Staind or Godsmack and on several tracks the singer could pass for Gavin Rossdale of Bush.

One of the things that makes this album so great is the bands ability to transition speeds without ever loosing flow or momentum in the album. The album is smooth from song to song, and there are no fillers on this record. Every song is great. The highlights of the album are "Just Got Wicked", "Anti-Love Song", "It's All Good", "Bleed", "Witch", "Send In The Clowns" and "She Said". I know that's a few too many songs to list as the best on an album, but this is really just one of the most incredible albums. This is a band that with a bit of airplay could be absolutely huge. If you haven't heard anything by Cold, you need to. This is what modern hard rock or nu-metal should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Melodic, mellow, yet powerful, September 12, 2000
By
Robin (Isle of Man, Great Britain) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 13 Ways To Bleed Onstage (Audio CD)
Having been a huge Cold fan since January 1998 when their self titled heavy post-grunge album rumbled onto the shelves and immediately captivated me with it's moody brilliance, it's been a long wait for this CD. My hopes were high as I put it in my CD player, and as the current U.S. single "Just Got Wicked" came ripping out I was secure in the fact that Cold had at least one surefire killer song on "13 Ways...". As the album span onwards I discovered that Cold had changed somewhat, this is a far more mature record than "Cold" ever was, with more melodies and song structures. Although there are more mellow songs on this album, and not so many heavy moments (although these can be found), the impact of "13 ways..." is no less, and is probably more so, than the first album. Standout tracks for me here are "Just Got Wicked", "She Said", "It's All Good", "Send In The Clowns", "Same Drug" and the beautiful acoustic tribute to the love of music that is the last track "Bleed", which features Aaron Lewis from Staind on backing vocals (to contrast this he appears screaming on "Send In the Clowns"). Overall this is magnificent and dark mood music, unmistakably Cold but with a more refined edge, Scooter's lyrics and singing as powerful as ever. As ever defying the stupidly overcrowded and dying nu-metal scene, Cold have stumped up another masterpiece. Best album I've bought this year.
