GI Style Mess Kit Review,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 133 G.I. STYLE MESS KIT (Misc.)
This is NOT genuine GI Issue. It is made in China and made of cheap aluminum. Don't waste your money, go buy the real thing from an army surplus store.

Certainly any G.I would use this. Only style is similar. Thin metal and even dented. Pan lever doesn't fit. plate and pan doesn't fit. I can't recommend buying this.133 G.I. STYLE MESS KIT

Just got my mess kits in. I ordered 2. They are definitely thin cheap aluminum as well as the handle being very flimsy. One of my kits came with the "pan" part of it dented in! I wouldn't recommend it. I only got it for my bugout bag as a 72 hour standby. I really don't expect it to last longer than 72 hours. Paper or plastic plates might be a better alternative and be cheaper and lighter too. Definitely not any GI issue I've ever seen. Its so cheap even the military wouldn't buy it!

this will not hold much weight before the flimsy handle will snap.its made in china how i wish i had my korean war surplus mess kit. but it will be ok in my bug out bag.it was only 8 buck i think so i didn't expect it to be stronger.

A little thinner than the old style GI mess kit, and probably not made to those exacting standards, but still an overall good mess kit for boyscout/cubscout campouts for my son.
The original GI one came with heavy duty utensils, which would be the only thing I would add to this kit.

Here is the U.S. Army standard issue mess kit (minus the eating utensils). This was dis-continued from Army use sometime in the mid-1980's. This mess kit is made of durable aluminum and comes with a top/bottom/and locking handle. According to the pictures, it appears that the eating utensils (knife/fork/spoon) do not come with this item. For the space provided, this item did carry a good amount of food - both the top and bottom can carry food. Easy to clean (unless you use it to cook with and forget what you are doing and the food burns into the aluminum). When not in use, attach the top to the bottom and then fold over the handle to lock everything into place. Eating utensils would be placed inside kit. Good for camping/backpacking, especially if you do not want to carry all that cooking gear. fits into a backpack quite easily and does not take up much room. Weighs less than 1 pound, if that. Only thing I can say bad about this item is that, if you place the eating utensils inside the kit, it does tend to get kind of noisy with the utensils bouncing around. It even makes for a good field-expedient pillow. Can not beat the price, since it does not come with the eating utensils. Only reason I give this 3 stars is because it appears that no eating utensils are provided, but you can just raid your silverware drawer at home.
