Editorial Reviews

David Garrett at 14 The Lost Album, Rediscovered & Issued For The First Time.

For me personally, 14 is the link between the recordings I made as a child and the albums Im now making in adult life. Im delighted that the CD is coming out after so many years because to some degree, it pulls together the story of my life - David Garrett.

14 is the story of violinist extraordinaire David Garrett, a remarkable tale in which music played the lead role from the very start.

Music has always been the constant factor in my life, the thing that gave me strength and equilibrium. In music I was able to find the motivation to carry on, even during the tough times - David Garrett.

The title of David Garretts album for 2013 is simple yet significant: 14 refers to his teenage years, the time of transition to adulthood, and the highly sensitive phase of life in which these recordings were laid down. I was something of an oddity among my peers, and at that age I was just as uncomfortable in the world of classical music - David Garrett.

Despite everything, he found stability in the love of the violin: even at a tender age, the emotional connotations of music came vividly to life for David Garrett.

This wonderful little treasure is a CD recorded in 1995, when David was 14 years old, but only recently released (April, 2013). What we would have missed had this really been lost ! The pieces are well chosen and performed with incredible precision for his age at that time.
While Garrett's 2010 recording "Paginini Caprices" is extremely well done given the technical demands made upon the violinist, I much prefer "14" which includes melodies both quieting and exhilarating. I have almost all of Garrett's CDs/DVDs and of all of them, my favorites are the "14" CD and the "Live at Baden-Baden" DVD.
To experience Garrett a little less serious(ly), watch his live concert DVD "Rock Symphonies" (English) or go out on a REAL musical limb and take in the "David Garret MUSIC" concert (German). A Note of Caution: Strict classical music enthusiasts beware of these ! ^-^

Wow, David Garrett at 14. I pre-ordered my CD before I heard any sample tracks. I've been very anxious to get it because I'm a huge fan of David Garrett at any age. I'm not a music critic but I know what I like and I really do like this CD. The more I hear it the more I appreciate it. I do wonder why they decided to use a piano accompaniment instead of an orchestra. I think the piano accompaniment works well on some pieces, but not so much on others. I really like Praeludium on this CD with the piano accompaniment though. When I was listening to it I could hear the orchestra (In my mind) like the arrangement on the Legacy CD. It's one of my favorite pieces and it's interesting to hear it like this.
The insert included with the CD explains his feelings about playing and recording this music almost 20 years ago. It's really fascinating to know what he thinks about this. Reading the insert made it easier not to compare it critically to the David Garrett music of today because it is a little different. This CD is simply a wonderful piece of his history and shows an extraordinary talent at a young age. Listening to his interpretation of the music from 14 and listening to it as he plays it today is a true pleasure. I'm glad so many pieces remain in his repertoire. He was, and is a wonderful artist and will remain one of my very favorites. I enjoy his music so much and am already hoping for another new CD soon. There just can't be too much David Garrett music in the world! He has CD's available from many different ages and it's obvious the man he is today is very comfortable in his own skin. This is a great "must have" CD for fans but I don't think it would motivate new listeners.

Musical imagination fuels emotional fluency, enhanced by exuberant technical proficiency, making this previously unreleased album hugely enjoyable.

1. La campanella
A stunning, ringing bell song in thrilling Paganini style: catapulting arpeggios, dashing scales, tuneful double-stop harmonics, and much more. The intensely romantic violin dashes through the exhilarating piece alternating between sweet lyricism and bravura extravaganzas with highly expressive nuances.

2. Devil's Trill Sonata - Larghetto
Dusk-hued, evocative violin draws listeners into an otherworldly melodic world with meandering cantabile lines, gently insistent double stops and tantalizing thrills. The opening theme is repeated to ensure listeners are completely beguiled.

3. Devil's Trill Sonata - Allegro energico
A bouncy, whirling dance-like movement. The warm, sonorous violin is romantically assertive, casting musical spells with infinitely expressive inflections.

4. Devil's Trill Sonata - Grave
A short, slow section of soaring legato lines. The melting dark chocolate-tone violin emotes in earnest with darkly glowing trills.

5. Devil's Trill Sonata - Allegro assai
An intensely beautiful movement with dramatic tempo shifts, alternating between alluring lyricism and dramatic virtuoso outbursts (legato string crossings, quick grace notes, rapid double-stop trills) until an extended, sensual cadenza by violin playing trills and arpeggios, simultaneously, on adjacent strings. A beautiful intimate feel permeates through the entire movement.

6. Humoresque op.101 no.7
A lilting, rhythmic rendition.

Easy to see why David Garrett is so good now when he was so amazing at an early age .

David Garrett is one of my all time performers. His talents far exceeds his years, looking forward to seeing him as Paganini.

As a young violinist, he accomplished a great deal. When comparing to his current music, sounds of the violin have been tremendously improved. It was very interesting to listen David's music when he was so young.
