I bought this to replace an ancient Dansk cast iron au gratin, which had developed a spider web of cracks in the enamel. I use this dish almost exclusively for roasting chicken and beef. I think an oval is a far better shape for roasting--there is less juice evaporation because there is less wasted surface area around the bird. Also, although there are many pottery versions of au gratin pans (including a le creuset), nothing, but nothing browns better than cast iron, which for roasting purposes, is what it's all about.
