Book Description

Seven by Twenty is an online magazine using Twitter as its publishing platform. Here is a collection of the best twitter literature from the first two years of the journal's history, on relationships, nature and the night, work, animals, seasons, science fiction and fantasy, and mortality, by 119 authors from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Qatar, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Reviews

What should appeal to the average reader is that most of the poems will not read like the haiku so many dislike because it seems to say nothing quickly. These poems, for the most part, are well crafted and thoughtful. The best of these caused me to stop and replay them in my mind.

The stories here also work like good poems, jabbing at the senses, the heart, and the mind like a dagger making quick work of our preconceived notions about fiction. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself chuckling one minute and gasping the next.

—Michael Neal Morris, “Bookmarks–140 And Counting,” Monk Notes, 6 June 2012.

5.0 out of 5 stars Think of these as very short, short stories April 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
140 and Counting is a collection of stories, poems, and other literary works using as many characters that can fit inside a single tweet on Twitter. Merriam is the editor of Seven by Twenty, an online magazine dedicated to works that fit inside a single tweet (140 characters or less) and using Twitter as its publishing platform. 140 and Counting is her collection of 141 of her favorites from the magazine divided into various categories: relationships, nature and the night, work, animals, seasons, science fiction and fantasy, and mortality. Contributors are listed in the back, and most have their Twitter address so you can follow them or read up on current works.

A quick read, especially for those guilty of enjoying tweets from strangers. And considering I use Twitter, I was amazed at how complete some of the stories and poems were from what the authors had to work with (limited characters and space to write the ideas).

5.0 out of 5 stars twitter as haiku March 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I love this book of memorable sayings taken from Twitter; they are necessarily concise, and all the better for being so. Having been an ardent fan of Twitter for over a year, I entered a draw in librarything.com, and was lucky enough to win a copy. It is only more recently that I have begun to appreciate haiku and the poignant and memorable images that can be so succinctly expressed. Why write a hundred words when ten can express the same thought and capture the same evocative image? Whittling down my favourite entries was difficult but these are the two I have chosen as examples from the seven sections:

stop to tie my shoe
look up evening comes
without warning
- Neal Whitman

the cold night
comes out of the stones
all morning
- Jim Kacian

I was also absorbed by the short biographies of the contributors, and shall most definitely click 'Follow' for several of them. Joanne Merriem, the editor of Upper Rubber Boot, is someone I intend to find out more about.

3.0 out of 5 stars For twitter, haiku or short form poems January 26, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lots of fun, as I love reading verse novels, haiku, and novels in email format over prose this filled the void for finding what I call "chunk" stories.
