5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best!, November 8, 2008
This review is from: 1492 - Conquest of Paradise (Audio CD)
If you ever wanted to sit back and listen to music that takes you to another time or place then this is the CD for you! Vangelis at his VERY best - not one track can be disregarded as 'fluff or filler'. I first heard it playing in the background in a big time bookstore. I ran all over the store trying to find someone who could tell me WHO & what & where that music was coming from! I finally found someone to help me & I purchased the CD that VERY day. Have loved it ever since. I never ever get tired of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Vangelis soundtrack, January 17, 2011
Vangelis' New Age style doesn't seem like a good fit for an epic drama like Columbus' voyage to the New World, but it works. I think the darker themes are better. The tracks from Old World Spain are particularly good, mixing "guitar" in. A must for Vangelis fans.

Vangelis is best known to many music fans for his film soundtracks. His score for Hugh Hudson's "Chariots of Fire" (1981) made quite a splash in its time; nowadays, however, his soundtrack music for Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" (1982) is probably best-known and most highly regarded. Vangelis worked with Scott again on the 1992 film "1492: Conquest of Paradise," one of two films released that year in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage across the Atlantic. Even if "1492" the soundtrack does not quite reach the heights that Vangelis achieved in "Blade Runner," it still provides tuneful, anthemic music of the kind for which Vangelis is known. If you like Vangelis's work on film scores, or if you are a fan of the film "1492," you should enjoy this soundtrack.

Movie sucked, but the music will live on! Love this CD, great emotion! Vangelis has always deliver the best emotional music scores. Chariots of Fire and 1492 rock!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, July 14, 2006

I first heard this music while watching a demonstration of Luzitania horses in Portugal this spring. The horses really seemed to be "into" the music and performed wonderfully. I too, loved the music and searched for it high and low. No one had it in stock and finally found it at Amazon. Now when I listen to this soundtrack I have vivid recollections of the beautiful horses in Portugal. All of my friends also enjoy the music.
This sound track is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly the best soundtrack ever made, July 19, 2009
This review is from: 1492 - Conquest of Paradise (Audio CD)
Christopher Columbus was, of course, a villain. It's a pity the Caribs didn't eat him for lunch, with chianti. The movie "1492" isn't good either. It's frankly boring, and I never managed to sit through all of it. However, Vangelis' soundtrack "1492 - Conquest of Paradise" must be one of the best soundtracks ever made! The music he made to "Blade Runner" comes as a good second.

The best track is, of course, number 2, "Conquest of Paradise". Its even been released as a single in some nations, used during sport events, election campaigns, etc. Another favourites of mine are tracks number 3, "Monastery of La Rabida" and number 8, "Eternity".

Listening to this CD during a very chilly, dark Swedish winter night is perfect...

Enough said. But mark my words: he should have been EATEN.

5.0 out of 5 stars Play it over & over!, August 17, 2011
I've always been a fan of Vangelis & purchased this (1492) and Alexander and Antactica, along with Weeping Meadow & some of Einaudi's works. Those 5 CD's played over & over for days, if not weeks! I never tired of them & still don't! They were such a beautiful mixture! My absolute FAVORITE of all is Track 11-12, (on 1492) which flows into each other. The titles leave me puzzled, but I've not watched the movie yet. I often play those two over & over at nite just before bed, with the lights dimmed. They leave me in such a peaceful mood. These 3 works of Vangelis just cannot be beat, as far as I'm concerned!

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, the best, March 29, 2006
This review is from: 1492 - Conquest of Paradise (Audio CD)
I am really picky when it comes to soundtracks. Vangelis is one example of me being really fussy. I'm am not a real big fan of his work (chariots of fire to be example - it stole the academy award of john williams for indiana jones) however i do not disregard his work.

I first perked an interest into his work when watching alexander. I later found my way to 1492 conquest of paradise. I made my choice based on reviews that held high praise of this work. Which i agree.

I can not notice that 1492 and alexander sound so similar despite being different pieces of work (one being less synthetic than the other).

The 2nd track is the highlight. If you closely listen it sounds very similar to track 12 or 13 of alexander (across the mountains). Same tune for the voices but it is more varied in Alexander.

Track 3 monastry of rabida is another excellent piece, i personally think it sounds similar to a cirque dis solei soundtrack when it reaches the end.

The use of the choir is of high standard (except track 5, light and dark, tracks 9 and 10).

The use of synthesisers may annoy some people but track 8 (eternity - will make you think otherwise, once you pass the annoying start)

i also am not a real fan of 'new age' music, but vangelis makes it an exceptional listen. Highly recommended for those who want a powerful listening experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunting music with a mystical feel to it., February 28, 2007
This review is from: 1492 - Conquest of Paradise (Audio CD)
While I was lukewarm with the Chariots of Fire theme, this particular album gave me a different feeling. As a lifelong horse lover, I was especially impressed when the first tract, "Opening" was used as background music for a major event. Last November, over 100 horses were stranded on an offshore sandbar in the Netherlands. As the flood waters receded, the video of their daring rescue showed footage of Dutch riders taking their mounts through the water to guide the surviving horses to shore. Vangelis piece, "Opening" was played which lent a poignant, almost tearful feel to the event. Only 18 horses drowned and all the rest were rescued.
