I bought this machine from a JoAnn store after having a horrible experience with a cheaper Singer model ("ProFinish" 14CG754). I already have a Brother 1034D, which I absolutely love, as well as a compact/cheap Kenmore model, but I wanted a machine that could do more (cover stitch, etc.). I've been using this machine almost daily for a month, and my observations are:

- Threading takes time but isn't difficult (especially with the tweezers and proper lighting).

- It hasn't broken any needles, skipped stitches, caught the fabric or otherwise misbehaved.

- The automatic tension settings seem to work well and you can manually adjust if needed.

- It is much more quiet than cheaper machines, and feels very sturdy/solid during operation.

- The PDF files on the included CD are numerous and not very easy to comprehend, but the included paper manual is well illustrated and thorough.

- The included set of tools and accessories is very thorough, also has just about every type of presser foot you could need for any project.

Thus far the only thing that disappointed me is that it has no free-arm capability -- which would make things like cuffs, hats and such easier; but that's not a huge problem. Also you must use serger needles, you can't use regular sewing machine needles (like the Brother 1034D).

If I run into problems or defects I will update this review, but so far I am pleased with this machine.

This is the serger of my dreams, not the nightmare so many of you have surmised. Although, I do agree the information that is included with the machine is vague and unclear. I found the books listed below by just searching the internet. And I found them at the exact place where they should be: Singer's site.
My opinion is that the non-experienced user has no patience, just wants to jump right in, and doesn't want to take time to read, practice and LEARN. While the experienced user thinks, because they have years of experience on sergers, they know it all and shouldn't have to waste time reading the how-to instructions and practicing. Just because it is a different model that does things differently they should not think they are too good to learn. For anyone who would like to download extremely thorough instructions with tons of extremely close up photos that shows you how to do everything this machine is capable of doing....go to
and download the Workbook and Instruction books. They are free from Singer, yours for the taking.
The first 2 files are part one and part 2 of the workbook. It is 347 pages and is split into 2 parts because of size. And the last one available, at the bottom of the list, is a condensed instruction book of 79 pages. I suggest anyone who has this machine to download these books, then read, practice and learn. Believe me, you will be glad you did. Remember the secret is the 3 steps...to read, practice and learn.
As a footnote here, I would advise everyone to print the workbook out and keep it by your machine. As you read instructions, turn to your machine and do it. You WILL learn how to use this wonderful machine.

I am not affiliated with Singer, in any way whatsoever. I just want everyone who has this machine to know that it is a great piece of equipment to making beautiful creations.

So I learned the machine and it performed brilliantly for almost a year. Not it's a paperweight as far as I can tell. I'm not a casual sewer, I have a business and I make wedding dresses for a living. I used it hard for almost a year then the tensions would go wonky while I was trying to sew. Now I'm not even sure how to get the settings right for an overlock stitch to happen at all. *sigh* Oh well lesson learned. I will continue to search for a serger that can keep up.

Hi from Berlin! I've been dealing with sergers (5-thread-sergers as well) for ages and I would like to give you some more information.
First of all: the current price is a real bargain! I bought the serger here in Germany for almost the same price, BUT in Euro.
The reason for the dropping price is for sure that so many owners (especially beginners) are facing so much trouble with it (I suppose that every third or fourth machine is returned to Amazon).

Which is NOT necessary at all. As other reviewers mentioned several times, reading the funny manual is the clue.
The machine is a real good and sturdy one, the only thing is that you need to learn how to handle it. If you are a real beginner and/or tend to be impatient, this is not the machine for you to buy. Go and find a simple one to start with.
For all the others: take that little money and buy this item. And in addition download the workbook and then: learn and practice.

For those who are not familiar with the current brand-mix: Singer, Pfaff and Husqvarna Viking are ONE enterprise (SVP worldwide) since a couple of years. Have a look in the internet and compare the following machines: Singer Professional 5, Pfaff Coverlock 3.0 and 4.0 and Husqvarna Viking Huskylock S25 (Maybe some of them are not available in the US, google it anyway). Don't be fooled by the external design, they LOOK different, but they aren't. Inside you'll find exactly the same mechanism (except the Pfaff 4.0 and HV Huskylock S25 which come with an electronic display, but this is more or less the only difference). If you compare the manuals which are available as downloads as well, it becomes quite clear, that the basic chassis is the same. What's not the same is the price.
