Editorial Reviews

The competition's Gold Medal winner, Ukrainian Vadym Kholodenko, captured the attention of audiences and critics alike for his powerful performances marked by vibrant imagination and intelligence. His cadenza in Mozart's Concerto K. 467-which he composed on the plane from Moscow to the Competition-showed him to have ''the guts of a true super artist'' (San Francisco Classical Voice). Kholodenko s 2013-14 season includes performances at the La Jolla Music Society, Krannert Center, Mann Center with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, and Oporto National Orchestra. This live CD of his competition performances features Stravinsky's Petrouchka and the complete Liszt Transcendental Etudes.

In listening to this phenomenal recording, one easily understands why Vadym Kholodenko won the highly coveted Gold Medal at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, one of the preeminent piano competitions in the world. His superb technical mastery of this highly challenging material is evident in every selection, throughout this recording. Liszt's Transcendental Etudes are amongst the most incredibly difficult classical piano compositions to play, and are tremendously challenging even for virtuoso pianists. In both the Stravinsky and the Liszt selections, what shines through is not only Kholodenko's technical mastery of the material, but what might be called his spiritual mastery, reflecting a deep understanding of the subtleties of each musical passage.

Whether he is playing passages of Stravinsky that call for raw power, or passages of Liszt that call for the most refined delicate nuances, this wonderfully gifted pianist rises to the occasion, and makes the music his. There are passages here where the playing, filled with scintillating brilliance, evokes images of dancing snowflakes swirling down on a winter's evening. This is music not just to listen to, but to absorb, to let sink into you, and to dream to. This recording of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes has now become my favorite, replacing even the recording in my collection by the legendary Liszt interpreter, Claduio Arrau. At the end of each of the two major pieces performed on this live recording, one hears the wild rapturous cheering of the audience and is swept up in their enthusiasm. Audiophiles should be pleased as well with the flawless quality of this recording. Listening to these passages, the sound quality was so immaculately clear, and of such high quality, that I almost felt as if the pianist were sitting at a piano performing in front of me. A maximum of Five Stars, for a very highly recommended recording.

The fact that this CD is a live recording makes it all the better. Vadym Kholodenko is a master performer and I can see why he won first place at the Van Cliburn competition. I am a teacher of piano and listening to these pieces in a learning experience.
