The Aerovation Checkpoint-Friendly Laptop Bag is made up of two independent compartments joined at the top by the shoulder strap D-rings and the handles. They cling to each other with Velcro. The two compartments are separated and laid flat on the X-ray scanner belt. Unlike competing clamshell designs, there are no snaps to un-do, zippers to unzip, or orientation to worry about. I bought this bag after seeing it being demonstrated at a photo convention. They were showing a video on how easy it was to get through security and that hooked me in.
Basically the bag is 2 separate compartments connected by Velcro and the handle. One pocket holds your computer only and when put through the x-ray is transparent to the screener. You other items (mouse, wires, etc) go in the other side. At San Fransisco Airport I had no resistance from the screeners and sailed through. The bag comes with both a handle to carry it like a briefcase and a shoulder strap. Over the shoulder the weight was evenly distributed as I took BART from Berkeley to the convention in South San Fransisco.
