Book Description

September 4, 2007
The Church finds itself in a period of great diversification and multiple expressions.  In the midst of great change, we have become confused about what really makes for healthy and authentic pastoral leadership. What are the basic and common characteristics necessary for pastors to be effective? How can lay people understand the pastoral call more fully and partner better with pastors for the health of their church? Here Mannoia and Walkemeyer examine the foundations of pastoral effectiveness and bring together nine experienced pastoral leaders to discuss the basic characteristics that exist in effective pastors.  Regardless of context or personality, ineffectiveness in pastors and subsequent ill health in churches is often not the result of a lack of calling, but instead is the result of misappropriated efforts to find success. Let’s help those who are called to be good stewards of their call. And let’s help churches have a chance to be healthy under the leadership of effective pastors!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb guide for pastors and those who work with pastors, October 29, 2007
By
This review is from: 15 Characteristics of Effective Pastors: How to Strengthen Your Inner Core and Ministry Impact (Hardcover)
15 Characteristics of Effective Pastors is one of those books that should sit on your shelf to be taken down and reviewed every once in while. The authors have assembled this list with the help of nine respected pastors in different regions through the US. The names and short biographies of these nine are listed at the back of the book. The authors don't pretend that they invented the characteristics. In fact they were chosen from a list of sixty four (also listed at the back) by the panelists.

What I most appreciated about this book is that it is not just one more collection of ways for pastors to improve themselves. Rather it is a description of what effective pastors look like. The impetus for improvement comes, as Kevin and Larry insist throughout the book, from our relationship with God. While there are things that we can do to be more open to that relationship, the work is God's.

Another aspect of 15 Characteristics that I liked is that it is an encouraging book. No matter where we are on our journey of serving God as a pastor, whether we feel like failures or successes, the authors let us know that we are never beyond God's grace. There is also a great deal of room for individuality. The authors state that we are all unique creations and will serve God best when we are being what God created us to be. In this light they give us a bonus chapter on different kinds of leadership.

15 Characteristics of Effective Pastors is written first for pastors, but it is a useful book for anyone who lives or works with pastors. I would recommend this book to churches, committees and families who need to help pastors evaluate themselves and their ministry. While pastors are the main audience, and occupy a unique place in the Church, every Christian will find their lives improved by taking the advice to be found in this book: Love and serve God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.

Armchair Interviews says: Unique look at effective pastors--as reviewed by a pastor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, Practical Truths, April 15, 2010
This review is from: 15 Characteristics of Effective Pastors: How to Strengthen Your Inner Core and Ministry Impact (Hardcover)
The most simple way to describe this work is incredibly basic and thoroughly practical. The authors used a research process called a Delphi Panel to determine what the fifteen characteristics they would write about. I think it worked. In my opinion, they came up with a good list. The characteristics they explore are:
* Grace and Growth
* Love for God
* Spiritual Formation
* Personal Integrity
* Love for the Church
* Servant Leader
* Model of Holiness
* Prayer Life
* Holy Spirit Empowerment
* Inspired Preaching
* Sure Calling
* Godly Character
* Personal Accountability
* Strong Marriage
* Visionary Leadership

Each characteristic has a chapter devoted to it. The authors do a good job providing simple, Biblical descriptions and applications for each characteristic. They also drew on the expertise of experienced pastors and church leaders from a variety of Christian traditions. One of the things I most appreciated is the appendices. One gives great insight into what to do with this information. One is a description of the Delphi Process that was used. One was the larger list that the final fifteen items were taken from. And the last is a list of summary descriptions of the fifteen characteristics.
Overall, this was a good book. It was not truly great, but it was good. I would recommend it for pastors, especially those who seem to lack focus or effectiveness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Much More than the Title Suggests, January 18, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 15 Characteristics of Effective Pastors: How to Strengthen Your Inner Core and Ministry Impact (Hardcover)
The title of this book almost turned me off but this one is far more than the title suggests. This book focuses on the `heart' side of leadership that ensures that a church leader survives and thrives over the long run. I found the book part devotional, part challenge and all well said. Our entire staff is reading this book.
