From the Inside Flap

Relaxation exercises are great for reducing stress and getting you through those difficult days feeling more energized and less frazzled. What you may not know is that stress reduction is as important in maintaining and repairing the health of your heart as proper diet, smoking cessation, and lowering your cholesterol. In fact, the right kind of stress reduction can help you prevent and even cure heart disease.

In The 15-Minute Heart Cure, cardiologist John M. Kennedy shows you how stress triggers a fight-or-flight response that can harm your cardiovascular system in a variety of ways. Then he helps you safeguard your heart health with powerful, easy-to-learn techniques for dispelling stress naturally, without spending a lot of time or money.

Dr. Kennedy explains the stress/heart-disease connection for the four major types of heart disease and shows you how to stop stress in its tracks with his proven B-R-E-A-T-H-E (Begin, Relax, Envision, Apply, Treat, Heal, End) technique. Whether you have had a heart attack, have been diagnosed with a heart condition, or simply want to keep your heart in great shape, this unique, practical guide gives you the tools you need to make every day less stressful and mitigate the impact of each stressful situation on your heart.

You'll learn how to:

  • Use guided imagery and breathing tech-niques to induce a relaxation response

  • Train yourself to find calm even in the most stressful situations

  • Apply variations of the B-R-E-A-T-H-E technique to specific cardiovascular conditions

  • Prevent heart attack, congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, and valve disease

  • Reduce and reverse the effects of an existing heart condition

  • Avoid dangerous and costly heart surgery by maintaining your heart health every day

Complete with numerous real-life examples of stress-induced cardiovascular events and how these patients repaired their hearts through stress reduction, The 15-Minute Heart Cure is the book that could save your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 15 Minute Heart Cure, June 3, 2010

Dr Kennedy hits this one head on. Finally a MD who understands that stress is the main cause and risk factors such as genetics, elevated blood pressure and elevated cholesterol are just that, risk factors. He guides you through an easy way to deal with stress and eliminate heart disease from your system. I've been a RN for 25 years specializing in cardiac care. Many patients that have heart disease are just treating symptoms with medication and procedures but not dealing with the underlying stresses in their lives that cause the disease in the first place. I highly recommend this book!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The story of the blind man retold, October 29, 2010

This review is from: The 15 Minute Heart Cure: The Natural Way to Release Stress and Heal Your Heart in Just Minutes a Day (Hardcover)
There are hundreds of books on Amazon about heart disease as well as stress reduction and the relaxation response. Some, like Dean Ornish's, are quite comprehensive and integrative in their approach to the problem. Others are overly narrow, stressing just one of the usual three legs of the tripod of diet, exercise, and stress. Then there are books that zoom in on one narrow aspect of their already narrow approach (the 2 currently most popular books concentrate on diet, though Esselstyne's "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease" emphasizes abstinence from all fats, dairy, even fish and flax while Sinatra's "Reverse Heart Disease Now"-- with its advocation of CoQ10 and numerous non-prescription vitamins--comes close to making a pill junkie out of the afflicted).

It's a little like the old Indian tale of the blind men who are asked to determine the precise nature of an elephant by feeling it--each coming to a valid but necessarily limited and partial conclusion. Jennings and Kennedy's book acknowledges all three legs of the tripod but emphasizes stress reduction through exercise, relaxation, guided imagery and a simple breathing technique. To readers familiar with Herbert Benson's relaxation response and the numerous books it has spawned, this will be familiar ground. No doubt even readers without a representative collection of heart books are likely to "speed read" all of the statistics and anecdotal examples that the authors have collected in order to substantiate the claim that their approach is proven and useful and to "justify" a book devoted to a few basic techniques--a 15-minute cure--that may already be common wisdom to many readers.

Still, a book with a highly marketable title and hyperbolic sub-title (the sick are often as impatient and anxious for a quick read and simple and complete cure as the healthy) is unlikely to mislead those readers who choose to pick it up. Familiar and repetitive some of the information may be, but books such as this have a way of being read and then forgotten. Like the Sunday sermon, even the reader who is familiar with the "message" needs to be reminded of it from time to time, the greater the number of doctors, specialists, preachers, cheer-leaders the better. So in one sense it's good, especially for those of us who have lapsed in our programs and our former good intentions, that books on the subject of heart disease and lifestyle changes keep appearing.

The book is easily recommendable, and would make a good Kindle download (though some of us might wish that the price were reduced by another 20% for such a comparatively fast read). The advice is well-taken, the exercises within the reach of virtually everyone, and, unlike some books promoting mega-doses of arginine and other exotic chemicals, vitamins and herbs, this one cannot possibly do the reader who follows its prescriptions any harm.
