Editorial Reviews

Grammy, Tony, Emmy Award-winning recording artist Barry Manilow will release 15 MINUTES his powerful new album filled with all original compositions on June 14.

After having recorded six critically acclaimed albums of songs written by the greatest songwriters of all time - from Gershwin to Bacharach, Manilow returns at last to his true passion - songwriting. Manilow teams up once again with lyricist Enoch Anderson for this astounding new work.

Inspired by the Andy Warhol quote that "in the future, everybody will be world famous for fifteen minutes," this energetic and exciting guitar-driven pop album explores the perils and pinnacles of fame's double-edged sword. More than two years in the making 15 MINUTES is set for release on June 14.

"Fame and success are something we all strive for, and yet when we get it how do we behave? That question jumps out at us daily from magazine covers, TV news and online gossip sites. In my world of entertainment, I've watched perfectly decent and talented people achieve the success they've been striving for only to crash and burn as their star rises. It happens in every walk of life, not only in the entertainment field; in sports, in politics and in daily life when the assistant manager gets promoted at the grocery store. It's something that continues to fascinate us, and for me it represented an exciting musical journey to explore, " explained Manilow.

Making a guest appearance on 15 MINUTES is young Nataly Dawn, lead singer of the white-hot group "Pomplamoose." Her rendition of "Letter From A Fan" is both innocent and eerie.

15 MINUTES, produced by Manilow and Michael Lloyd is a captivating tale of someone who achieves fame, blows it and begins again.

Yesterday, I met Barry Manilow in New York City, at Radio City Music Hall, for an autograph signing. The event was to promote his new album, "15 Minutes," as well as his upcoming concert series at the venue. Barry spoke with me for several minutes and was one of the nicest celebrities I've met.

After listening to "15 Minutes," I have to say that it is an excellent album filled with dynamic vocals and various musical styles. If you're a Barry Manilow fan that enjoyed "Here At The Mayflower," you'll love this album. It's a concept album that follows the story of young man's rise to fame, as well as his subsequent fall from grace.

"15 Minutes" kicks off with a 1-2-3 punch; the title track is a guitar-laden, country inspired, mid-tempo rocker that sets the tone for the album. The second track, "Work the Room," is a funky song where Barry expertly raps the lyrics. If you've ever had to look for a job and go to a networking event, you'll appreciate this song. "Bring On Tomorrow" rounds out the first three tracks, and it is a classic Barry power ballad. Filled with beautiful lyrics, a gorgeous arrangement and soaring vocals, this track is one of the best on the album. Needless to say, I love it!

The fourth track, "Now It's For Real," is another guitar heavy track that finds the album's main character realizing that he's achieved the success he was after. Barry sounds like he had a lot of fun recording this song and it comes through in his impassioned vocal.

"Wine Song" gives the listener an inside view into how the young star's life has changed. Now he's surrounded by people who constantly tell him they love him and that he's beautiful. This, along with the drinking and drugs, foreshadows what's to come.

When I first heard talk of '15 Minutes,' I wasn't sure what to expect. Being a life-long fan of Barry's, I was very comfortable with his musical style and his "big Barry ballads." After hearing the album, I can honestly say that it has everything that makes a Manilow album great: catchy melodies and powerful lyrics, only brought to us in a way that took Barry out on a limb. The album gets you moving, both physically and emotionally, as it takes you on a journey that anyone can relate to no matter what your walk of life. This album has something for everyone whether you're a fan of the "old songs" like me or a new listener. Mr. Manilow's amazing musical genius does not disappoint! Take a chance on this one...you'll be very glad you did!

This album arrived as a surprise to me, and I appreciate a good-great musical surprise! Makes it all the more fun and exciting.

This album tells a story with simplicity and great sound. Music listeners and those in the business should surely relate to this. Barry's voice sounds clear and fresh. The album has a rock and soulful vibe with excellent instrumentation: many electric guitar riffs, Barry's beautiful piano work, bumping drumming, percussion, and strings.

The tracks are well-sequenced to tell a story, so I highly recommend an enjoyable focused listen to the entire album. Yet, each individual song includes nice and interesting transitions and completeness within itself.

Focusing on a few tracks, Wine Song has a psychedelic vibe, Written in Stone and Winner Go Down (a favorite) have beautiful melodies. Letter From a Fan / So Heavy So High is a haunting trippy favorite. The whole album is really good, fresh, and timely - prompting a big WOW! from me.

After listening to the entire album, check out the digital booklet to fully absorb the whole thing. Thanks for the digital booklet!

Big kudos to Barry, the band, and lyrical contributions from Mr. Anderson!

I was scared, really scared where I listened to the snipets online prior to the album coming out. The snipets didn't sound good to me. The pre-release of Bring on Tomorrow gave me hope but in all honesty, I love a good ballad more than anything. In fact, I was so disenchanted with the snipets, 15 Minutes was the first Manilow album in 3 decades that I didn't buy on release day. Last Friday, I had a two hour drive to kill and drove past a Best Buy .. hunkered down the $15 bucks and WOW. I'm impressed. This is the most un-Manilow Manilow album I've heard. Every song is unique. And, like every other Manilow album, the more you listen the more you hear and the better it gets. I already mentioned that I love "Bring on Tomorrow", but the title track "15 Minutes" is very catchy and my new favorite song on the album is "Slept Through the End of the World". Barry's next project is a sequel to 2:00 Paradise Cafe (Jazz). All I can say is that I'm sorry I doubted the album before hearing it. As Manilow fans, we can look forward to a new album a year of new material for several years to come. I won't make the same mistake twice - I'll be at the store the first day (or order in on Amazon ahead of time).
PS - Barry seems to be reinventing the way music is sold, marketed and delivered to the audience. Check out Radio Manilow. I could listen to Barry DJ all day - he knows so much about music and each artist. He's a true American Treasure.

barry manilow 15 minutes is awsome!!!!!!!!!!
I think it's time for Clive Davis to be put out to pasture. I don't think he ever respected Barry's talent as a songwriter. This is evidenced by 10 years of cover albums since "Here at the Mayflower" (and another 10 years of cover albums before that). This new album is doing very good... Read More
