I received this chess set as a gift, and I love it! The board and pieces have been constructed very well of solid wood that should prove to be very durable. A feature not found with similar sets is that the board doubles as a case for the pieces which are actually held in place individually so they don't bounce around and get chipped. This is an excellent gift idea for any chess player or anyone who wants to learn!

The chess set I received is not the same as the item pictured or described in some other reviews. The product I got is poor quality, and I will return it. The wood is very lightweight -- the kind used for inexpensive doll houses or cheap hobby craft kits. One review described the the pieces as being held in place inside the board, but this is a very basic box that would let the pieces rattle around.

This fine set offers perhaps the biggest bang for your buck in terms of quality, size, design, and portability for a mid-range chess board. Width-wise, its folding size is that of a book, and just as easy to carry. The pieces are fine Staunton wood pieces, and the polished board itself has an elegant appearance. I highly recommend this for anyone; it will last many years. Only negative: The set's only detraction is that it does not come with extra Queens. But you can substitute pieces or just use another set. I prefer the plain-Jane plastic weighted Hastings tournament piece sets which are inexpensive and highly durable.

The board surface of this chess set is not wooden. The box frame is wood, but the surface is a nonwood laminate material. Very disappointing.

My boyfriend has been wanting to teach me how to play chess, but neither of us had a set, so I got him this one for his birthday. It's fantastic. Very compact, easy storage. Looks sleek. Pieces aren't very heavy, but they also don't chip (which his old ones did). A great selection for beginners and casual players.

I purchased this for my 4 year old son who likes to play chess. The pieces are a good weight, sit well on the board and are a nice size for a child. They have good detail as well. The board is a very good size and a very nice smooth finish. It has a flip locking mechanism to keep the board closed. However, the hinges keep the board from lying perfectly flat. It is raised up and the board seperates slightly. My kids don't seem to notice but it should be mentioned. Overall, I can recommend this set to anyone. Good price and nice set.

A fairly decent chess set. The pieces are all wooden but extremely light so the feel isn't particularly great. On the bright side, each piece has nice balance so you will not knock them over with gentle pushes. The elastic straps on the inside are pretty decent as well. All in all a decent set but it will not give you great satisfaction.

Edit: Just changed the durability to 2 stars and overall to 3 instead of 4. The elastic holding the pieces is flimsy and I think it is going to snap/tear any day. For any half way serious player I would not recommend this and would much rather they spend a little more to get heavier pieces separately with a separate board.

This is a fine chess set that folds up and holds all the pieces inside. When folded, it easily fits in a suit case so you can take it with you. The pieces are held inside by an elastic so it's a bit of a hassle putting them all back. You also have to make sure that you don't put the wrong pieces across from each other or it won't shut. Overall, this is a good choice at a good price.

Seems durable-I love that it folds and pieces are storable in the lined case. But if I had to choose again I would go with one that comes with magnetic pieces to help from sliding on the board-especially because it is mainly used by my kids.

I'm very unhappy with the quality of this chess set. Like many chess boards this one is made form two separate pieces of wood hinged in the middle, allowing it to be closed like a "briefcase" and store the chess pieces inside. The problem is that when you open it the surface of both pieces of wood do not align properly, nor do they come flush against each other leaving a small gap.

I strongly recommend spending $10 dollars more to get something that works and that you'll enjoy.
