3.0 out of 5 stars (3.5 stars) Somewhat good, somewhat stupid
Cannibal Corpse's albums have always intrigued me, I'm not sure why. The covers are usually so wretched and offensive it just makes me go "cool!" Anyway, in their latest offering box set they give fans something to collect and hold dear for a long time to come. They really didn't cheap out on the stuff either. On top of 3 CD's of greatest hits and unreleased material we...

I'm so tired of these morons writing reviews about bands that they haven't spent 1 second listening to and simply feel like bashing for no real reason. For an amusing experience, the next time you see a review by one of these jokers, click on their link and look at the other CDs they've reviewed. Two examples -- on the page for the Cannibal Corpse box set we have "Asephilocity" who has said that Tenacious D is a "masterpiece" and The Sickness by Disturbed is an "exceptional piece of work". His apparent colleague, "mazaro", ponders the mind-bending question about Korn "How could I not give this 5 stars?", and about Insane Clown Posse he boldly states "I love ICP". Our friend "mazaro" also states that Cannibal Corpse "isn't death metal", a statement obviously reinforced by his brutal death-metal background. If growling vocals, brutal low-end guitar riffs, unrelenting double-bass drums, and gore-filled lyrics do not make a band death metal, then these death-metal experts are welcome to tell us all what death-metal is. Why are these chronic oxygen-wasters reviewing Cannibal Corpse CDs? The band obviously must offend their gentle Christian sensibilities, which as we all know shouldn't ever be tampered with. Clearly their moms and dads have sternly forbidden that them from venturing into the death metal aisle at their local music retailer, a warning to which they have no doubt strictly adhered.

As for me, I have not even purchased the Corpse box set -- I am saving my money for the Feb. 04 release of their new CD, "The Wretched Spawn". The track listing indicate that this set is clearly an all-encompassing overview of their entire musical catalog up to and through Gore Obsessed. Cannibal Corpse remain one of the best death metal bands around. Fans and metal critics agree that the band are excellent at what they do, esp. the guitarists & drummer (who, contrary to what some chowder-head thinks, had never lost time).

Nu-metal fans, stay the f*** away from reviewing Cannibal Corpse. Save your limited vocabulary for the new Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit albums. Perhaps there you will find another "exceptional" piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars 15 Year Killing Spree, January 28, 2004
By

This review is from: 15 Years Killing Spree (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
I have no problem admitting that I hated Cannibal Corpse the first time I heard them. It was many years ago when I was first learning to play the bass guitar, and a friend of mine had suggested that I listen to some of Alex Webster's bass work. I found a copy of their Live Cannibalism album and bought it. Though, I was very impressed with the bass playing, I just didn't get the growling vocals. That was my introduction to the Death Metal genre. Not too long after that, I was head banging right along with them, and I have now become a huge fan of the band and the genre in general. I can't explain why, I think it was the live version of "Blowtorch Slaughter" that finally sold me. But as far as the vocals go, you either like them or you hate them, and I can understand how they may be a little difficult to get used to and understand.

So here we have the Cannibal Corpse Boxed Set. Upon first glance you'll notice the morbid artwork of full time collaborator Vince Locke. You open up the box to find three cds, two containing their greatest works (as chosen by the band), you get three songs from each album. The first greatest hits cd is all Chris Barnes while the second is all George Fisher. There's a quite a bit of music for you right there. It's great to have the cd's with all the essentials, especially for driving. The 3rd disc is packed with old demos. The demos are pretty interesting, but they are more for collector's sake. There are also a few current cover songs on the album, which turned out great. Along with the Cds, there is also a DVD, which contains their first concert. The first concert is more for collector's value, as it is very poorly filmed, but it's still a really cool gem. Also on the DVD is some studio footage from the "Butchered At Birth" recording sessions. The studio footage is basically the guys recording and goofing off. It's pretty cool. Next is the unreleased Moscow concert. The Moscow concert was supposed to be released long ago, but the members of the band were not at all impressed with the sound quality, so they canned the project. Everything is filmed very professionally. There is also quite a bit of footage of the band off stage. Last but not least you get the perfomance at the Metal Blade birthday party. This is the greatest concert on the DVD. The boys are in top form, and they play an excellent set. Along with all of that, you also receive a Cannibal Corpse poster, guitar pick, comic book, and a rather large booklet for the boxed set itself that explains the history of the band and what they've accomplished. The comic book is really cool if you're into Vince Locke's artwork, although it is not in color. For the price this is offered at, as a fan, I'd say it's a great deal. There's really nothing I can complain about with this release, that's why I gave it five stars. If you are a fan of the band, this will be a great own.

5.0 out of 5 stars 15 Years Of Cannibalism And Depravity, December 21, 2005
This review is from: 15 Years Killing Spree (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite Cannibal Corpse releases in my collection. I bought it sometime in late 2003. I am a huge Cannibal Corpse fan. So this was something that I couldn't do without. So I bought it and it delivered indeed.

Now for my review. This is not another Cannibal Corpse album. This is a boxset that the band released in celebration of their 15 years of musical cannibalism and depravity and it is a pretty kick a-- release to say the least. The set features some pretty desirable suprises that any true Cannibal Corpse fan would want to have. Now lets review everyting one by one.

1. CD-1: Best Of 1 - The songs here are the best ones from Eaten Back To Life to The Bleeding not forgetting Zero The Hero which is from the Hammer Smashed Face EP.

2. CD-2: Best Of 2 - The songs here are the best ones from Vile to the Worm Infested EP. Let me not forget that there are NO songs from The Wretched Spawn album here because that album was not released yet. That's the album that the band will release next. Let me also not forget to say that according to the band and Alex Webster himself (aka Hammer Smashed Bass), the songs on CD-1 and CD-2 were chosen by Brian Slagel who is the head of Metal Blade Records (Cannibal Corpse's labal).

3. CD-3: Unreleased Demos And 3 Covers - The stuff here is basically 3 demos and 3 new cover songs. First, there is the demo called Cannibal Corpse. This is the demo that many fans have immortalized has the Suffocation demo or something put on a split album with the band Suffocation but again, the demo is called "Cannibal Corpse." This was the band's first demo that got the band signed to Metal Blade Records. The next demo is the Created To Kill demo. Now this is something that many Cannibal Corpse fans have sought after, especially after Chris Barnes left the band. Like I said in my review for Vile, after Barnes left, this demo surfaced on the net as well as the underground tape-trading circle but the tracklisting, quality, recording and all was full of errors and fans yet, still wanted a copy. Good news. They get to hear it here in all its glory. The next demo is the Gallery Of Suicide demo. This is probably a pre-production demo recorded during the Gallery sessions. The next suprises are 3 covers. The first cover is called Bethany Home (A Place To Die) by 80's thrash/crossover band The Accused. The original version is on The Accused album More Fun Than An Open Casket Funeral. The next cover is called Endless Pain by 80's German thrash legends Kreator. The orginal version can be found on Kreator's debute album Endless Pain. The last cover is called Behind Bars by 80's speed/thrash metal band Razor. The original version can be found on Razor's album Violent Restitution.

4. DVD - The next suprise is a DVD. The DVD features some very unbelievable suprises. The first thing on this DVD is the band's first show which features the original line-up from Eaten Back To Life, Butchered At Bith and Tomb Of The Mutilated but this show was recorded before those 3 albums were ever made. Next is the recording sessions for Butchered At Birth. Chris Barnes, Bob Rusay and Scott Burns are here. You also see Alex playing Innards Decay on his bass. The next thing is the Eat Moscow Alive '93 show. This is the best part of the DVD because there is a lot of awesome things going on. First, the band line-up is the line-up for The Bleeding album. Even though The Bleeding would be released the following year, this show was filmed the year before. Originally, the band wanted to record it in order to release it as their first official home video but they were not happy with the way that the recording of the show came out. But despite this unimportant setback, I think the show still rules. So nothing wrong there. Another good thing on this part of the DVD is seeing the band backstage, in their dressing room, on the tour bus and out buying stuff. So everything rules here. Next, there is the show that the band did at the Metal Blade 20th Anniversory show. Let me not forget that there were songs on the set that never made it on this DVD. Those songs are only available on the Metal Blade 20th Anniversory boxset and the Metal Blade 20th Anniversory Party DVD. Both releases are available in places like the Metal Blade website, FYE, Tower Records and here at Amazon.com. So get your copies.

5. A Page Book - This book has old pictures of the band, a menue and details on the boxset, stories about the band's early days and other cool stuff.

6. A Comic Book - A comic book designed by Vince Locke who designs every Cannibal Corpse album cover. The comic book is called Unleashing The Bloodthirsty.

7. A Poster - Some of the posters that would come in every boxest would be signed by the band. Mine was not.

8. A Guiar Pick - A black guitar pick with the Fisher-Era red band logo in the middle.

So all in all, this is an extremely important addition to any Cannibal Corpse collection that NO Cannibal Corpse fan should be without. Very essential indeed. So buy it and experience 15 years of cannibalism and depravity curtesy of the masters known as Cannibal Corpse. Enjoy the experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gods of Grindcore, November 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: 15 Years Killing Spree (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
Cannibal Corpse were arguably the best death metal band of the 90s, and this package may very well prove it. This box is jam-packed with all the essential Corpse tracks, cover songs, previously unreleased material, a DVD containing 27, that's TWENTY SEVEN live performances (including their first gig in 1989), and, most notably, tracks from the Created to Kill sessions, which, in my opinion are worth the price alone.

"Well, their music is heavy and gutteral and I wouldn't know good music from a hole in the wall so don't buy this." Well, nobody asked you. Today's Cannibal Corpse lineup includes four of the finest musicians in heavy music. Two amazing guitar players, an absolutely sick bassist, a drummer whose lines aren't the most technical in the world, but are always crushing and intense, machine-gun fast. Not to mention a singer with one of the best growls out there, and the ex-members are all just as talented. (However, in my opinion, I think Chris Barnes sounds much better on SFU's Bringer of Blood than he did with Cannibal.)

Overall, this box is everything a box-set should be; all the best songs, but enough new material to make it worth the $50. This box set is a 'don't miss' for metal fans.

I'll begin by saying that I've had this box set for about three weeks now and I still can't get enough of it. Of the four boxed sets I have: Slayers Soundtrack to the Apocalypse, Iced Earth's Dark Genesis and Alice in Chains' Music Bank, 15 year Killing spree beats out all three of them.
I'll run through the set:

Disc 1: Best of volume 1- This is a greatest hits collection of all of their earlier works with Barnes on Vocals. All songs are 24-bit digitally remastered, which gives the songs from Eaten Back to life and Butchered at Birth a crisper sound. All the songs from Tomb of the Mutilated and Bleeding don't sound much different because the production on those albums didn't really need any remastering. It even has an amusing cover of Black Sabbath's Zero the Hero. My only minor complaint Is that they didn't have "Meat Hook Sodomy" which is one of my all time favorite CC songs.

Disc two: best of volume two- This is a greatest hits collection of all of their later works with Corpsegrinder on vocals. This is the Disk I listen the least because I didn't think that CC was quite as good without that deep, gutteral, cookie monster voice of Chris'. But Corpsegrinder's good too.

Disc three: previously unreleased:
89' demo- The demo they made when they first got started.

Tbe Created to kill sessions- As you probably already know this is what later became known as the Vile album. Chris departed ways with CC while recording this, so his vocal tracks and lyrics were shelved until now. I would definately say that this version is better with Chris on Vocals than it does with Corpsegrinder.

Gallery of suicide demo- As you can probably already tell this is the demo for Gallery of Suicide. It has different bass parts and guitar harmonies than the album.

The three cover songs- I haven't heard the original songs, but they sound brutal. My favorite is Behind Bars by Razor.

Disk 4- DVD

1st Cannibal Corpse show 1989- The first show they ever did opening for Death Angel. The picture and sound quality aren't exactly great but it's pretty cool to see Cannibal Corpse when they did their first show.

Butchered at Birth studio footage- Paul doing his drum tracks and some clowning around in the studio. I thought it was pretty funny.

Cannibal Corpse Eats Moscow Alive- A concert they did in Moscow, Russia. The audio quality isn't all that great. The bass guitar and the bass drum sound meshed together. But the visual Quality's pretty good, some good camera angles and in between songs you see them backstage and on the tour bus.

Live at the palace in Hollywood, California- This is the Highlight of the DVD. The audio and picture quality is superb. And this is just a really bad ass concert.

That's the set. Now go do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "15 year Killing Spree."

About time a death metal band had a box set. This is truely what a box set should be. Full of stuff for the fans and not just rehashed stuff but bonus rare recordings and live videos. Tons of knick nacks for fans too. A comic book, pic, poster, and booklet without having to pay 100 bucks like some other bands (Slayer I'm looking into your direction). Every metal band should have a box set like this. A box set of excessive stuff. I'm glad Chris Barnes is represented in this box set. I've been dying to hear the original vile aka created to kill. Thank you Cannibal Corpse!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Chris who??, December 11, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: 15 Years Killing Spree (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
I just want to start off by saying I was quickly won over by George when he took over on vocals and to me he's far more superior than Chris Barnes.
This box set is a great treat for true Metal fans and those who have supported CC since the early Chris Barnes era and the current era.
This set comes with a few goodies such as 1)a comic book based on the song "unleashing the bloodthirsty" with artwork done by the one and only Vincent Locke. If you don't know who Vince Locke is, he's the guy responsible for CC's very graphic and sometimes disturbing album covers. 2)A guitar pick with the CC logo on it. 3)a poster of the band, apparently 2000 of these were signed by the band, i ordered mine early and didn't get one. 4)a booklet that includes a brief history of CC written by Frank Albrecht of Rock Hard Magazine. But whats nice is how it chronicles why some band members left and were replaced.
Now onto the Discs....
Disc 1&2 are the greatest hits chosen by the band which feature the respective lead singers; Chris Barnes (1989-1995) and George Fisher (1995-present). if your like me then you already owned most of these albums.
Disc 3 is what most CC fans have been looking forward to. It includes the original 89' demo but more importantly the 'Created to Kill' sessions! you hear certain songs that Barnes had sang which made it onto the Vile album but with his lyrics and its great stuff but unfortunately this entire disc hasn't been produced very well, its sounds like someone hid a mic in a garbage can to record them. it also includes the gallery of suicide demo and 3 cover songs from early death metal bands. If you're a fan of CC's cover of Metallica's "No Remorse" then you'll like these tracks. It's pretty awesome to hear the guys cover songs in their style of music.
Disc 4 is a DVD which is hosted, appropriately, by the 3 remaining original members; alex(bass), paul(drums), and jack(guitar). It contains the first CC show. which was filmed with 1 camera that goes in and out of focus and the sound isn't the greatest but it was 89' and they were unknown what'd you expect? also included is a very brief clip of the B.A.B drum and bass sessions which includes some pretty funny goofing off in the studio from the band. the DVD also has a 60 minute show entitled "CC eats Moscow Alive" from 1993. this show was filmed with a professional camera crew with about 6 or 7 cameras but was never released because CC's sound man couldn't make it to the country and they had to rely on some outside help to mix the bass and drums for the show. unfortunatly, according to alex and paul the new sound guy didn't mix it properly and they weren't happy with the final result so it stayed on the shelf....until now. lastly, the DVD includes a performance from late 2002 in Hollywood, CA and you can truly tell how CC has grown into some of the best musicians OF ANY GENRE (i can only think that Les Claypool is a better bass player than Alex Webster). The show includes basically a song from every album and features George doing his trademark "propeller" headbanging. And I think it was shot with only 3 or 4 cameras.

Lastly, I gave this 4 stars and not 5 because 1)I already owned most of the songs, 2)the comic was rather lame, and 3)what am I going to do with a little guitar pick? If your like me you buy this set for Disc 3 and Disc 4 which are well worth it.

*UPDATE* If you noticed the people who give 1 star reviews either: 1)haven't even PURCHASED the box set or 2)are not even fans of the band. then why review it?? you haven't seen or listened to it. i've read some reviews for the Slayer box set and some of the low rated reviews were great for helpfullness since people who actually bought the thing were saying why they felt they were let down....not just useless idiots who think they know what's up like the people who've reviewed this title.
