A MUST HAVE FOR EVERY KNITTER,
By
This review is from: 150 Knitted Trims: Designs for Beautiful Decorative Edgings, from Beaded Braids to Cables, Bobbles, and Fringes (Paperback)
Any book with Lesley Stanfield's name on it rates a look from me. This English author, designer and editor
always comes up with something special, as she does in this book. The variety of knitted trims is mind boggling: There's a great variety of borders, bands, and braids, many trimmed with beads or sequins. Frills, flouces, and lacy edgings expand the mix. But wait -- there's more! You'll love the loops and fringes, the insertions, and a whole section on unusual and charming knitted flowers, leaves, and other fun things like a heart, a colorful butterfly, and a wonderful tassel with a knitted skirt. There's even a tiny Christmas stocking. The photos are close up and clear, and you can see every stitch. Instructions are well layed out and are so short and easy to follow that I don't see the lack of symbol charts as a negative. The trims are all both unusual and usable. This is a great book to give a knitting friend -- so buy two and keep one for yourself. But don't lend out your copy -- chances are you'll never get it back!

Great for project ideas!,

Found this book to be way more helpful than the Nicky Epstein series "Knitting... The Edge" series. Loads of ideas. I don't really care that there are no charts, I find it easy to work with out them and would definitely recommend this book for anyone who feels the same. Plus the designs are way cooler. Not a big fringe and bobble gal.

Lots of edgings I hadn't seen in other books and many that could be used for bag handles and belts. Good photos. I would love to buy this book (checked it out from the library), but the use of row-by-row instructions alone, without charts, would make it much less fun for me to use.

The variety of edgings to try from this book will entertain you for hours. I have so many little sticky notes going all the way around the pages of this book---marking oodles of pages of edgings for me to try---that it sort of resembles a porcupine! One thing I do to make double use of my experiments is to use tiny knitting needles and crochet thread to test these edgings, and when I'm done-----I have a bookmark to give as a gift! I just keep making it to the length I like a bookmark to be and I can also see if I like the look of that edging for a future project!

I was sure this book was a winner because I have the Stanfield book of stitches which I use often and the reviews here were so positive. I'm not disappointed. Lack of charts doesn't bother me as the patterns are generally just a small number of rows. All the patterns are illustrated first in color together and then arranged with the instructions. Included here is the skill level. 5 projects are pictured at the end for ideas and there is a good index. Recommended.

This is a beautifully illustrated book with great explanations for any level of knitter. The trims are pretty, knit quickly and can be used on most anything, a t-shirt, little girl's skirt, pillow case, use your imagination. I saw the book at a friend's house, asked for one for my birthday and am now giving one to a very caring nurse who took care of my husband and was interested in it.

I am crawling out on a limb and rating this with a five because of all the excellent reviews. I don't own this book but after reading the 3 star review about the book not being any fun for them because of the lack of charts I said to myself, "Yippy, hooray!:)" and had to admit that for me that in itself would make me want to give it five stars.
I am so sorry if I have offended anyone who likes charts only. My problems are that it takes me forever to read charts and I end up translating the charts into instructions of row by row knitting. This is time consuming for me because I go back over them a second time to make sure I haven't made any mistakes (and I have made a few in my short time of knitting). I am going to order this book this morning and hope that it works out. I am branching out to creating my own patterns and wanted to get some ideas for edging at necklines, sleeves and bottoms of sweaters. Good luck to all of you who have chosen to take the jump and buy this book. Happy knitting for yourself and your loved ones -- Which we all know is for ourselves too because there are two great feelings after the knitting is done: 1. Knitting for loved ones - You knit a piece for someone you love and they think it is beautiful and want to put it on to wear even though it may not be in season. 2. Knitting for ourselves - You wear your knitted piece and someone says how much they like it. Ahh, life can be so sweet. UPDATE: September 20, 2011 I bought and received the book. It is a beautiful book with fantastic photographs for working the patterns by. There aren't exactly 150. There are 129 knitted trims and the rest of the 21 trims (which I don't consider to be trims) are leaves, flowers, hearts, balls, butterflys and a small Christmas stocking. But the 129 edgings are fantastic and the directions (yes there are no charts) are easy to follow. I recommend this book to have in your library. For me it will be a welcome addition so that I can spiff up the sometimes boring edge of a knitted project.

I love this book the patterns are easy to read, and separated by style which makes it easy to find the right trim for you project. There are several ideas to use the trims with, besides your knitting projcts. The knitted flowers are fun to add as embellishments as well.
If your thinking about getting this book I highly recomend it! A must have for knitters that love to embellish their projests!

This book is a treasure. I am constantly lookng for ways to make garments, especially scarves, take on a bit of punch uaing edgings and trims. This is just the book for it. Pictures of trims were beautfully photographed, detailed, and clear. Directions repeated a smaller photograph of the trim, listed the difficulty of the trim (ie, beginner, intermediate, or advanced) and the directions are very clear.
This book is a must have for every knitter whether beginner or advanced - you'll get a host of ideas from it and your garments will never again be boring. |
