5.0 out of 5 stars A Nutritional Powerhouse!
This is one of my favorite cookbooks, and I own several hundred, including 40-50 vegetarian cookbooks and over a dozen vegan cookbooks.

3.0 out of 5 stars I feel bad not jumping on the bandwagon here...
For the price, this book isn't bad. It uses a ton of very natural and healthy ingredients and the recipes themselves are all very tasty. They are all very "light" which makes them great diet food or summer fare.

My problem is that there is very little variation. There are soups... and pasta / rice /starch... and beans. And that's about it. Of course then...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Nutritional Powerhouse!, February 16, 1999

This review is from: 150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day (Paperback)
This is one of my favorite cookbooks, and I own several hundred, including 40-50 vegetarian cookbooks and over a dozen vegan cookbooks.

The recipes are full of the most nutritious vegetables, greens, and grains, combined with great spices. You'll find many recipes for a variety of greens, not just spinach, and for a variety of grains, not just pasta. And the finished recipes are a pleasure for the eyes as well as the taste buds -- bursting with color.

Many of the foods recent studies have found to be extremely nutritious are included -- high antioxidant sweet potatoes and squashes and red peppers -- high fiber beans and whole grains.

For those who eat a low to very low fat diet, oil is used moderately in the recipes and in ways that aren't integral to the recipes; the recipes can be easily adapted to be even lower in fat if desired.

As an added bonus, many recipes will take well to freezing, so you can cook in volume and freeze for workday lunches.

All in all, an impressive, extremely nutritious and delicious cookbook. You won't be disappointed with this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solomon makes eating vegan easy, accessible, enjoyable!, June 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day (Paperback)
Solomon's recipes do not require expensive, hard to find ingredients usually only found at high-priced whole-foods stores. I was terrified to start cooking vegan because of the inaccessibility of some of the ingredients called for in many veggie/vegan cookbooks. Fear not--98% of the recipes in Solomon's book require only a trip to your local grocery. Ex: One medium onion, one carrot, 2 c. brown rice... I thought, "I can do this!" No miso, no "dew concentrate from the char-char plant, found only in the East Indian highlands". This is Veganism for Dummies--no offense, Jay!

Oh yeah--the recipes are yummy, too. We're carnivores at heart, and we love them.

I found veganism after a religious conversion to Coptic Orthodoxy which requires its faithful to not eat animal products for about 2/3 of the year. I thought I'd starve to death! Whether you're Vegan for health or spiritual reasons, Jay Solomon's book is a MUST HAVE, especially for beginners! I am happy to report that 150 Vegan Favorites is for EVERYONE. Hat's off to Jay Solomon!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best vegan cookbook available, October 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day (Paperback)
I bought a lot of vegan cookbooks when I first became vegan, and this is definitely the best. I have liked pretty much every recipe I tried, and there are still many post-its flagging promising recipes that I haven't got around to yet. You will see similar recipes in other books and magazines, but for easy preparation, good instructions, and taste, this is the best one-stop source book. I have just bought two extra copies to send to family members whom I will be visiting over the holidays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shonna, August 14, 2000

This cookbook has some wonderful recipies even if you aren't Vegan. I do not happen to be Vegan but my boyfriend is and living together and cooking meals that we both liked was a nightmare. So I figured, what the hell, I could use the help and ideas and I ordered the book. I was surprised! The meals are not only delicious but incredibly easy to make (even my boyfriend can handle it). The Sizzling Black Bean Soup is amazing! So tasty, us meat eaters couldn't believe it was animal free. So, if you are looking for a middle ground for the vegan and non-vegan household this is the way to go. Cruelty/animal free recipies that are actually delicious. In fact, the recipies are so good, I hardly cook meat much anymore at all. Believe me, it will save you many kitchen headaches! You won't be sorry you tried it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm impressed!, January 14, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: 150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day (Paperback)
This book lives up to its name: I've cooked two of the soup dishes so far, and they ARE easy AND delicious! I am an absolute non-cook, so if I can make these dishes, anyone can! Really nutritious ingredients too, and it's possible to substitute for exotic ingredients (i.e., regular cabbage for Chinese cabbage, etc.) I'm excited to try more recipes in this book. Solomon has made it brain-dead for those of us who are culinarily-challenged- thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great cookbook., May 16, 1999
This review is from: 150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day (Paperback)
This is a great vegetarian cookbook. It is concise and not overwhelming, especially to someone just beginning to get into vegetarian cooking. It would be perfect if it had pictures.

Most of the recipes are quite simple to make. They include many of the most delicious items of the beautiful vegetarian table that we are so lucky to have so readily available today in marketplaces all over this country.

The Quinoa Pilaf was really good. The Rigatonni with Ratatouille Red Sauce also was great and all were fairly easy to prepare.

I have many vegetarian cookbooks, including many that are much more expensive and much more "trendy," but I keep coming back to this one. Also, I know I enjoy it because it's the only one I've have felt compelled to write a review of.

This book kicks some major fanny. I'm not a true vegan, but I try to eat vegan as much as I can. This book has been a tremendous help. The recipes are straightforward, simple, and help get the creativity in the kitchen going. This was my first vegan cookbook, and may turn out to be my only vegan cookbook. If you're vegan, you won't be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars I feel bad not jumping on the bandwagon here..., July 8, 2006
This review is from: 150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day (Paperback)

Of course then there are beans with pasta... pasta with soup... soup with beans... and so on. But after awhile there's only so much you can do with these categories of food before you get really bored. The flavor variations in this book didn't strike me as very unique, and it's easy to get tired of making the same recipes over and over, even though they're very tasty. The ones that are unique and original -- where the author tries to combine flavors from different ethnic cuisines into one meal -- weren't quite as good as the rest of the recipes. And none of the meals kept me full for very long -- I was hungry within an hour or two of eating. Of course this isn't a problem if you're able to eat frequently, but for someone who works, goes to school, and generally isn't home often and only stops for food two or three times a day, being hungry constantly gets annoying fast.

These are also really not kid-friendly recipes (not that it was advertised as such; just a warning).

I still keep this book around for the few recipes that are winter favorites, like the mushroom barley soup, but I don't think I'd recommend it.
