3.0 out of 5 stars Sony Botches Marty again!, August 1, 2001

I now have two Marty Robbins Greatest hits compilations. Both "Lifetime of Song" from '82, and 16 Greatest Hits from '98, fail to include the stereo recordings of five of perhaps his greatest hits on the country charts. They are, El Paso, Devil Woman, Don't Worry, Ruby Ann, and Ribbon of Darkness. On 16 Greatest Hits, I find it funny that the producers tag the back of the cd with notes on how the latest technology was used to create the ultimate sound on this CD, and yet they still choose the mono masters, used by Columbia,to stamp 45's back in the early '60's. Someone's either not doing their homework on Marty's work, or Sony's just trying to hastilly turn a buck on the Columbia back catalog. I suspect the latter! Anyway, I'm not sure which collection contains the original stereo recordings of these hits, but trust me, I've heard them on other country compilation albums, and there's no comparison. Other than that, there are some salvagable tracks on here, Tonight Carmen, from '67, and Just Married from '58 are exceptional, (and in stereo i might add)! Overall a good compilation, but the stereo flaw costs this one two stars. C'mon producers, you can do better, especially 40 years after the fact!

5.0 out of 5 stars a great voice gone, August 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 16 Biggest Hits (Audio CD)
I grew up with Marty playing on the first (black & white) tv on our block in Phoenix. He ran the camera and was the performer for his one-man guitar-singing show which filled a mid-afternoon slot. Through the course of a long career he did as much for the ballad as any performer, matching in the truth of song, his lively, simple and plain-spoken lifestyle. His rich tenor, great voice control, and unique arrangements have proven timeless. They entranced me as a youth, and nothing has changed. Whenever I first hear Marty singing, I am inexorably drawn toward it with a slight shiver of anticipation...

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Marty Robbins Tape, August 27, 2006
This review is from: 16 Biggest Hits (Audio CD)
THis is truly the best Marty Robbins tape. 15 of the songs were number 1 hits.If someone is not a Marty Robbins fan he will be after he hears this CD. I first purchased the tape a few years ago, and recently took it on a road trip with a friend. He liked it so much he asked to borrow it and will not return it. He is now a real Marty Robbins fan. So I bought the CD and play it all the time. It is an album that makes me feel good.It is my favorite album right now. There really are no albums made today that can copare with the greatness of Marty and his songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Greatest" is ONLY an Opinion, November 29, 2004
This review is from: 16 Biggest Hits (Audio CD)
There is nothing here to disappoint(unless as one reviewer claims, the sound is flawed in part). Know this, "I'll Go On Alone" from early in his career when Marty did not have the support of his wife in his music career (she changed her mind though) and "Among My Souvenirs" (done to death by other singers) were NOT two of his greatest hits as to sales, radio play, etc. The definitive collection is STILL "The Essential Marty Robbins". You should enjoy those two songs mentioned above and all of the rest on this, but don't be fooled by "greatest" claims.

Marty Robbins / 16 Biggest Hits (Columbia): First of all, Marty Robbins recorded an album which is one of THE greatest albums of all time, in any genre, titled "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs". I strongly urge you to get that album. However, Marty recorded many hits besides the ones that came from "Gunfighter" and this marvelous CD has the best of his best, which makes it a perfect companion for those who already have his Masterpiece. As a single disc hits album, this gets Five Stars.

Good album! Always liked Marty Robbins and his music. He had variety of styles and great arrangements and backup musicians. Will eventually get more of his recordings. Too bad todays "stars" don't have his talent, training and sense of musicianship!
