Rediscovering Buddy Clark,
By Onalee McGraw (Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 16 Most Requested (Audio CD)
I was 9 years old, a confirmed Buddy Clark fan, at that young age, when he was killed in a tragic plane crash - 1949. He had a radio show called the Carnation Contented Hour. Many of the best music critics and disk jockeys would refer to Buddy as "the late great" Buddy Clark. You can tell in his voice how much he loved to sing for people - what joy he had in it. Everyone will love this CD. With the miracle of the internet - he can be redisovered by new generations.

Bringing Back Old Memories,

I was in Junior High when Buddy Clark was at the height of his fame. Most of the other girls were crazy about Sinatra, but I loved Buddy Clark. He had such a beautiful voice, he could put over a song like nobody else, except maybe Bing Crosby back in his early days. Buddy Clark would sing with Doris Day, Dinah Shore and make them sound even better than they were alone. It was just terrible when he died in that plane crash in 1949, by then I was in High School, and I was just devastated. It was years before I could listen to another male singer, but Tony Bennett came along, and I felt that he was as close as anyone could get to singing as well as Buddy Clark sang, and some songs he sang reminded me of the way Buddy sang, like Because of You. I've been buying Buddy's records lately, and enjoying him all over again in my retirement years! RCinNYC

This is the best-sounding Buddy Clark CD available. While all the songs have been previously available, Sony has gone all-out to give us Buddy Clark's best performances in unbelievable sound! The remastering on this CD will lead you to think these selections were recorded in the late '50s or early '60s - certainly not the mid-to-late '40s! I can't imagine it ever getting any better than this. Treat yourself and your ears to this wonderful CD!

This is a very good reissue of Cr. Clark's most famous songs. A welcome addition to an library of popular music of the 1940's.

Buddy Clark could sing out the phone book and make it sound wonderful; the songs on this album more than prove it! Buddy's excellent diction enhanced his performances all the more; and he never disenchanted his very loyal fans. Indeed, it's a testament to Buddy's exceptional talent that CDs of his songs still sell in our times. In addition, the quality of the sound on this CD is very good and the artwork is nice even though it is a bit standard for this CD series.
All the numbers here are wonderful but of course I have my favorites as you will, too. "I'll Dance at Your Wedding" has Buddy singing his part like the fantastic crooner he really was; and those somewhat spoken lines also display his amazing ability to deliver a tune so very well. "Linda" was a very big hit for Buddy Clark; he sings this to perfection--and beyond! I love it! The arrangement also makes good use of the brass and the strings. "How Are Things in Glocca Morra" shines when Buddy gives it s fine interpretation; he's squarely front and center which is right where he belongs. "Ballerina" charms me with its natural beauty; and "Peg O' My Heart" sounds beautiful to this day. "Love Somebody" is another cute number from the days when Buddy was so very, very popular; and the arrangement makes this number bright. "South America, Take It Away!" features Buddy working with Xavier Cugat & His Orchestra; together they make "South America, Take It Away" very special and it's one of my personal favorites on this CD. "Now Is the Hour" is also very well done. "It's A Big Wide Wonderful World" has a splendid musical arrangement to accompany Buddy as he sings this faultlessly, but wisely the musicians never even try to steal the show away from Buddy. "You're Breaking My Heart" is easy on the ear even if the lyrics aren't all that happy; and that chorus sounds pretty good even though Buddy Clark never really needed any backup. Buddy also does a fine job on "Baby, It's Cold Outside" which he performs with Dinah Shore; what a terrific duet! The album ends nicely with Buddy Clark doing justice to "I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You);" this was a very popular song at the time Buddy recorded this and his version of "I'll Get By (As Long As I Have You)" is easily one of the very best I've ever heard. Buddy Clark lives on through his music; this album is a must-have for his fans unless they have these numbers already on other CDs. This is also a fine starter CD for people just discovering the magical artistry of the great Buddy Clark; and anyone who enjoys classic pop vocals with a big band twist will not be disappointed.

Not bad for a collector of hit songs..!,

I collect billboard hits. This album has 12 of 16 songs thatwere actually hits.....truly remarkable average. I have no way of knowing whether they were the orginal songs though, but I'm willing to take a chance..... Most hit albums are not hits at all, which if you collect, you soon find out. At least the song titles match up!! |
