5.0 out of 5 stars Second of two sensational Dinah hit collections, October 2, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 16 Most Requested Songs: Encore (Audio CD)
Dinah was one of the most successful female pop singers of the 1940's, though she could also sing jazz when she was allowed to. This collection and it's companion volume, 16 greatest hits, contain all the essential hits that Dinah recorded for Columbia from 1946 to 1950.

This collection includes the major hits Laughing on the outside crying on the inside (#3), You keep coming back like a song (#5), I love you for sentimental reasons (#2), Anniversary song (#1), You do (#4) and I wish I didn't love you so (#2). Some of these songs faced stiff competition from other versions of the same song and it wasn't always Dinah's version that charted highest, but Dinah's versions are all of a high quality. Another of Dinah's hits included here, Far away places, stalled at 14, partly because Dinah's version came too late to compete with Maggie Whiting, Bing Crosby and Perry Como, all of whom hit the charts earlier. Perhaps Dinah only recorded the song after hearing it on the radio - if so, she did well to chart at all.

This CD and it's companion provide a wonderful introduction to her music. Between them, they provide 32 great songs including all of Dinah's most commercially successful songs from the period covered. Buy them both !!!!

This review is from: 16 Most Requested Songs: Encore (Audio CD)
This Dinah Shore CD entitled 16 Most Requested Songs Encore! gives us another sixteen songs that are NOT on the first 16 Most Requested Songs CD; and therefore this is a worthwhile CD to consider if you're a Dinah Shore fan. Dinah again demonstrates her fine ability to deliver a song remarkably sweetly and I love to hear her sing. The quality of the music is very good and the artwork is good, too.

"Laughing On The Outside (Crying On The Inside)" is a torch song that Dinah sings wearing her heart on her sleeve; and wow, how she delivers this with passion! When you hear Dinah sing this you just know she was born to sing songs like this and more. I'm very impressed. In addition, "All That Glitters Is Not Gold" has a fine musical arrangement and the title of this song was so popular it became a saying in our regular everyday language! I love that percussion and Dinah never sings a superfluous note." You Keep Coming Back Like A Song" makes good use of the strings when Dinah does this one up right; and I really like "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons." "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" sounds quite good for a 78rpm source--Dinah could never be stopped from giving a great performance--she was THAT good.

"Anniversary Song" stuns me with its beauty; and listen for "The Gentleman Is A Dope." "The Gentleman Is A Dope" doesn't take the exact same look at love that "Anniversary Song" does; but it still sounds quite good anyway. "Golden Earrings" is a number that I first heard when Peggy Lee sang it but Dinah's rendition is very good, too. Was Peggy Lee proud of Dinah's version of "Golden Earrings?" I would like to think so. "How Soon (Will I Be Seeing You)" boasts a great melody; and the big band style arrangement fits in perfectly with Dinah's vocals.

"The Best Things In Life Are Free" charms me especially when Dinah Shore sings it; and I really like "Far Away Places." "Far Away Places" is a most romantic tune that gets the royal treatment from Dinah; and this works very well for this ballad. It's definitely a highlight of this album. "So In Love" is another love song that features Dinah singing it with all her heart and soul; she really makes "So In Love" sound fresh, new and exciting. The album also ends well with Dinah Shore performing "It's So Nice To Have A Man Around The House." "It's So Nice To Have A Man Around The House" is another song that had a title people incorporated into everyday language. Dinah sings this as if she were the sweetest songbird ever and it makes an incredibly fine ending for this CD.

Dinah Shore could never be forgotten; but she does deserve to be remembered more than she is remembered these days. Hopefully this will change; I would also like it if CDs like this one would come back into print. This is a "must-have" album for Dinah Shore fans; and people just getting to know Dinah Shore's talent will enjoy this album, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular, May 22, 2008
This review is from: 16 Most Requested Songs: Encore (Audio CD)
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this is one of the greatest CDs of popular music in the entire catalog. Dinah Shore, at this time in her career, possessed a voice that was warm and subtle at the same time. She turns every selection on this album into a jewel with perfectly honed phrasing and a brilliant sense of drama. The Gentleman is a Dope is a great example of Shore taking a perhaps second rate song and investing it with just the right sentiment and feel. She can also create a dreamy mood when necessary, as in Far Away Places. Shore's career at this time typified the trend of solo artists performing in their own right rather than as a vocalist with a big band, a trend that Frank Sinatra typified when he left Tommy Dorsey. When you hear these recordings by Shore, it's clear that the big career she had on television was entirely justified by her talent. There is no album of popular songs that I enjoy much more than this one. It belongs in everyone's collection of popular music.
