Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kroeger and Thuesen, specialists in the business applications of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), wrote the best-selling Type Talk at Work ( LJ 1/92). Now, they apply the MBTI principles to relationships.

From Booklist

As business consultants, and in seminars, workshops, and previous books--Type Talk (1988) and Type Talk at Work (1992)--Kroeger and Thuesen, who are "life partners and business partners," have built a small industry around the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which has its roots in Jungian psychology. Here, they explain the theory's 16 "types," defined by individual preferences within each of four dichotomies--"extraverted"/introverted, sensing/intuitive, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving--and then view the impact of these personality-type similarities and differences on "four keys to a lasting love": communication, sex and intimacy, finance, and conflict. A third section explains how "type talk" can help couples negotiate, establish contracts, and learn to cope with and even to celebrate their similarities and differences, while an appendix supplies brief profiles of the 16 MBTI personality types. The market for advice about relationships seems never to be saturated, and the 16 Ways approach, while it may seem a bit mechanical, is more nuanced and complex than many of its pop-psychology competitors. 5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely relationship handbook, February 25, 2000

This review is from: 16 Ways to Love Your Lover (Paperback)
16 Ways to Love Your Lover is an excellent relationship handbook. Its an easy introduction to the 16 temperaments and would be especially beneficial for those who's significant others are of a different temperament to themselves. Even though it is aimed at couples the principles of understanding/relating to others is very helpful. It gives practical everyday life advice, from communication to sex and money matters. The book gives short examples of couples which helps you to see the different temperaments in action and there are excellent graphs that can help you solve/understand differences or trouble spots between you both. Apart from all this, I also found it helpful in specifying my own needs and wants in a relationship. If you want to improve your relationships, or understand yourself better, its definitely worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even after 33 years of marriage, we're laughing and learning, June 29, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 16 Ways to Love Your Lover (Paperback)
Even though I've read a great many books on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, this is the book my wife and I share as we learn more about each other and ourselves. We've given it as gifts to friends and business colleagues who describe problems and troubles with their relationships. They read 16 Ways and report that "Now I understand why ..." and that "we're talking about why and how we are the way we are and how each of us has to relate."

As my wife said, "you're so normal, and I thought you were just being difficult!"

If you've never heard or read of the MBTI or Psychological Type, or if you are an expert, this book has much to offer. Highly recommended to couples who are wondering how love can grow when lust subsides.

2.0 out of 5 stars There are better books on Type., December 29, 1998
This review is from: 16 Ways to Love Your Lover (Paperback)
If you've read Kroeger and Thusen's other books, like "Type Talk At Work" or "Type Talk", you'll recognize most of that material in this book. "16 Ways To Lover Your Lover" doesn't add much to the two works mentioned above, and if you are well read on the MBTI this book won't add much to what you already know. However, if Type is new to you, and you're looking for some fun ways to explore your relationship with a significant other, this book is worth a shot.
