5.0 out of 5 stars Selective Tastes, October 8, 2005
This review is from: 1605: Treason & Discord (Audio CD)
This is a heavily "themed" collection, the theme being the English social-religious crisis of 1605. The thematic culmination is "Master Tresham," a contemporary (drawn from period sources) concert piece--evocative, original, striking, doubtless powerful in concert, but listenable on a CD perhaps once. Buy the CD instead for William Byrd's Four Voice Mass--an "early music" reading, pitched low sung edgily, evoking its contemporary seditiousness--stands the hair on end. Buy it also for Byrd's "Civitas sancti tui," the final proof of how disciplined, taut, and yet at the same moment heartbreakingly emotional this music can be.
