5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
I was looking for a decent box to hold shotgun shells, but didn't want one that was too heavy (old mil surplus) or too expensive. This Plano 1612 box turned out to be just what I was looking for. I have six boxes of 12 gauge shells in mine and it looks to be about half full. NOTE: The handle is a bit different than what is pictured, but does the job just the same. I...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad
The box is built well as you would expect. Just note this model does not have the rubber seal for the lid.

I like the brass locking bar on the side and the option to put on a small padlock if need be. The box isn't waterproof, but will do a perfect job of keeping my shells in one secure place.

Other Plano models come with a tray insert, but I didn't feel that it was worth an additional seven or eight bucks just for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Field Box Doubles as an Ammo Can, January 4, 2011

Mine just arrived and I am pleasantly surprised. It's very light but very sturdy.
The handle appears to be very strong. You would be able to fit a bunch of stuff in here and have room left over. Would be great for camping supplies as well. Or if you are looking for a way to store and organize some of your ammo away neatly this may be a good item.

The rough inside dimensions are:
13.25" Long
7.00 " Wide
8.25 " Deep

Since the case is wider than the common military type cans you are able to pack them differently and the extra room makes all the difference

Using as ammo storage and creative packing you should be able to fit the following:

30.06 - 17 boxes
12 ga - 9 boxes
20ga - 15 boxes

Of course if you want to throw the stuff in there bulk you'll get even more.
There is also a mini storage compartment on 1 side of the lid to store any other smaller items, and the latch seems very secure so nothing will accidently fall out.

I like the Plano items and would buy this again

Also this item is made in the U.S.A.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice but not what you see in the picture., August 18, 2011

The photo here is of the Plano 1812 Magnum or XL field box, not the 1612. This box is the 1612 a little smaller then the one in the photo and does not come with dividers, lift out tray or the water proofing O ring. Also the handle is smooth not molded with finger grips. I got two of these thinking they were the 1812 based on the photo and before I knew the difference. The 1612 are great boxes and I already have mine filled with construction stuff. One will hold 12 tubes of caulking. I plan to get a 1812 also for my bigger items.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great heavy duty box, August 5, 2011

This is a great box for just about anything, I don't have my shotgun shells in it yet because I just moved but it is a great box to put other stuff in as well. I just wish I had spent the extra couple bucks to get the water proof one with an o-ring.

I got this to use as an ammo cache and its great! I fit 450 rounds of 5.45x39 in here, some magazines, some .22 and I still have TONS of room left. That being said it definitely isn't "too big" as I felt other options were. Maybe if you wanna store 100,000 rounds go look for something else, but the size is perfect for me and I would guess would be great for most people. I didn't want something too big--this is a very manageable size and when full of ammo still is a very manageable weight. Its made from very sturdy plastic. The whole item is very sturdy, including the handle--which I worried about under the stress of all that ammo. But my worries were in vain--its a very good sturdy design. Theres even a little compartment on top (pleasantly surprised me) for keeping cleaning rods/other small items. 10/10!

I have a couple of these field boxes for ammo and other firearm stuff. No complaints. They can be a bit heavy when they're full.
