Editorial Reviews

With 1619 Broadway The Brill Building Project, Kurt Elling honors the legendary location that the London Telegraph called "the most important generator of popular songs in the Western world." Even for the ceaselessly inventive GRAMMY®-winning singer-lyricist, it s a hugely unexpected step, and one guaranteed to further solidify his reputation for bold innovation and superb craftsmanship. The 11-track collection features renditions of classic songs that came out of the Brill Building.

Some of the tunes on 1619 Broadway The Brill Building Project were actually written years after their composers had left the Brill entirely. For example, Elling explains, Carole King, like many other signatories to The Brill Sound, never had an actual office at the Brill. So it doesn t pay to be too didactic about any of this. The Brill is both a physical reality and a mental construct; and because of that, I felt comfortable casting a wide net.

Track after track, Elling and longtime collaborator/arranger, Laurence Hobgood, illustrate the creative fireworks that have marked their work together from the start. Some tracks, such as On Broadway and You Send Me, glow with atmospheric reharmonizations (either audacious or subtle), unexpected rhythms, and jazz sensibility. Others, such as I m Satisfied and A House Is Not A Home, artfully distill the essence of the original through a jazz filter. But all of them manage to strike a balance of tradition and modernity that will by now be familiar to Elling s longstanding admirers, on a program of songs guaranteed to bring new fans to the party.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hip, Swingin', Hot & Soulful September 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I always wait in great anticipation for a new release from Kurt Elling. You never know what magical mystery tour he will take you on. His new CD bows down & honors the music created in the famous Brill Building in NYC. Most of the songs were from the "Golden Age of Rock & Roll"; Leiber & Stoller, Bacharach & David, Mann & Weil, Goffin & Carole King, Paul Simon & Sam Cooke. An added bonus was a Duke Ellington song & one from Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen. Everyone reading this is familiar with "On Broadway", "Come Fly With Me" and "I Only Have Eyes For You" and like a true jazz musician, Elling interprets these songs with his own jazz instrument -- his voice. Some highlights for me are Sam Cooke's, "You Send Me", "I'm Satisfied" (originally sung by Lou Rawls),"A House Is Not A Home" and the comical number, done originally by the Coasters, "Shoppin' For Clothes", with assistance from the great bassist, Christian McBride, which reminded me that jazz does have a sense of humor & I loved the touch at the very end when Kurt says "you would never treat Pizzarelli this way"!! BREATHTAKING, beyond words, are Elling's version of "So Far Away" and "An American Tune". If they release a "Best of" album someday, I'm sure they will be included. I was shocked with the addition of "Pleasant Valley Sunday" which is very frenetic & avant garde and totally unlike the bubble gum version made popular by the Monkees. It is full of social criticism & it brought to mind how I was also shocked the first time I heard Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew". But, my absolute favorite track is Ellington's "Tutti for Cootie" -- it is everything that jazz is to me--Hip, Swingin', Hot & Soulful. And that is also how I would describe Kurt Elling.

And I must never leave out the fantastic musicians--to name a few, pianist & arranger, Laurence Hobgood; John McLean, guitar; Ernie Watts, tenor sax and Joel Frahm, whose sax work on "Shoppin' For Clothes" really sold it!

5.0 out of 5 stars 1619 Broadway: Kurt Elling November 27, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
From the first sound bites, to the last note - a continuation in the musical growth and evolution of Mr. Elling. The more I listen to this set, the more I enjoy it. Having recently seen him perform many of the compositions from this album, I remain thoroughly amazed at his and his musical cohort to interpret tuns we all know in ways that make them new and amazing. Laurence Hobgood is amazing, as are the drummer, bassist, and guitarist John Mclean. Mr. Elling's interpretation of Paul Simon's American Tune is simply stunning. The album holds together well, and offers a full range of familiar and not so familiar compositions performed as only Mr. Elling can do. A great addition to the KE collection. He and his musical companions are continuing an amazing musical journey started LONG ago, never stopping in one place for too long.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tin Pan Alley - Elling style. November 16, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I like Kurt Elling. I like him because he is willing to take chances with familiar material. There is nothing here that is on the level of "Norweigan Wood", but the first four songs are all done very well. "So Far Away" is also given the Elling treatment. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" is positively nutty.I listen to Kurt Elling now the same way I used to listen to Mark Murphy - with great anticipation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elling's take on pop songs September 26, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These are interesting and highly listenable versions of pop songs. It's not necessarily what I want to hear Kurt Elling sing (When he closed with an Ellington tune, I thought, Now you're talking.), but he does it well. I'd give it 5 stars but for the inclusion of Shoppin' for Clothes and Pleasant Valley Sunday. They are fun to hear a time or two but won't wear well as I listen to the CD over the years.
When I heard Ian Shaw's CD of songs by Fran Landesman, A Ghost in Every Bar, I thought, This is the kind of thing I wish Kurt Elling would record. I hope that he will someday.

Did not like it first time around. Almost sounded, is affected? Liked it more after multiple plays. He is inventive in his unusual (should I say unique?) interpretations.

A consumate Elling fan, I had expected this CD to rank at the top of his releases. I liked it but not as much as others that were released earlier and are played more frequently that this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars give it time November 6, 2012

I had to listen to this CD a couple of times before I was sold on it. I think I was expecting to hear the usual versions, but I forgot that Mr. Elling has his own take on things. I now rate it highly.
