Book Description

June 5, 2012 Ring of Fire
#14 in the multiply bestselling Ring of Fire Series. After carving a place for itself among the struggling powers of 17th century Western Europe, the out-of-time modern town of Grantville, West Virginia must fight for its life in a war-torn Europe just emerging from medieval skullduggery.

1636. Grantville has bounced back and established its new mission and identity, but it seems some have been left behind—people like Bernie Zeppi, courageous in the battle, but unable to figure out what to do with himself in a world that’s utterly changed. Then Russian emissary Vladimir Gorchacov arrives in Grantville and hires Bernie to journey to Moscow and bring the future to a Russia mired in slavish serfdom and byzantine imperial plots. Bernie jumps at the chance. He figures it to be an easy gig, complete with high pay and hot-and-cold running women.

But one thing Bernie hasn’t counted on is the chance to find his purpose in Mother Russia, from fighting the needless death of children from typhoid to building the first dirigible in Russian history. And then there’s love. Just as Bernie realizes his feeling for a certain Russian noblewoman may have gone way beyond respect, he finds them both enmeshed in the deadly politics of Kremlin power struggles.

War with Poland is afoot and Russia itself is about to get a revolution from within–three centuries early. Bernie Zeppi, former Grantville auto mechanic, is going to have the chance to prove he’s not the loser he believed himself to be. For now Bernie’s task is to save the woman he loves and the country he has come to call his own from collapse into a new Dark Age.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Shortchanged Here June 10, 2012
Format:Hardcover
I didn't read any part of this in Grantsville Gazette so, I didn't feel shortchanged here. Since I didn't know what was written by Flint, Huff or Goodlett beforehand, I wasn't prejudiced against any part of the book. The book moves across a longer period of time than most of the books in this series. While that does lead to some feelings of discontinuity, that did not destroy my enjoyment of the book. The activity takes place mainly in Russia which presents more of a challenge to bring into the level of advancement in Western Europe. It was an engaging story, well written if not all to Flint's standard and I found it absorbing and enjoyable. And, there was action and conflict as opposed to the Virginia Demarce books which is why I find the book much more appealing than hers. It appears that there will be a sequel to this book. And, in spite of some negative reviews, I am looking forward to it. I did enjoy reading 1636: The Kremlin Games and I'm waiting for the next book as I waited for this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing change in the series-back to business August 11, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Like other reviewers noted, this one moves along briskly like the ones solely written by Eric Flint or 1633 with David Weber, rather than drifts into very minor plots for a hundred pages. This one goes back to many of the big questions, serious challenges, unintended consequences and ripple effects, and a moving story with interesting, fleshed out characters who feel real. The setting in Russia a century before Peter the Great's similar attempts to jerk Russia into parity with the rest of Europe with the odd impacts of the Grantville knowledge base and examples is inspired and so far more interesting than the other slowwwwwwww moving adventures in the adjacent lands. Covering 5 years in one book for a whole country instead of a few months in a couple of towns or cities was much appreciated and hopefully will inspire leaner editing. There's plenty of conspiring, factions, influencing, and spying here like the other books, it just consumes far fewer words than the middle books in the series, just as Flint's books typically get to the point and cover a lot of ground in a racing narrative. Maybe it's the test runs of the content in the Grantville Gazette that accomplished this, reacting to feedback and writing it in pieces an old, proven trick of Dickens and Twain in making more appealing stories.

This book is a collection of some of the more talented work of the Granville gazette edited and collected and of course focused on the development of Russia as a player in the 1632 universe. I enjoyed the stories on the board when they first showed up, enjoyed them more in the Gazette's and consequently enjoyed them here. Compared to the Virginia Demarce material, this material is less polished but more enjoyable and more exciting. The basic adventure style Eric Flint established early on as well as some of the more long reaching feelers placed in the Saxon campaign shine here. Only the collaborations with David Weber have been better (as collaborations) and only Flint's own work on the topic exceeded the collaborative work.

Weaknesses were in the polish, in some of the glue used to make the stories fit together and some of the repetition placed in the story again as some sort of joint. Unfortunately it came out slightly disjointed. This book did leave a promising setup for a sequel that I hope is soon forthcoming. An excellent contribution to the series and an easy page turner.
