Specialty Oven Mitt, February 17, 2005
This review is from: Isi 17-Inch Silicone Oven Mitt, Blue (Kitchen)
A pair of these great specialty oven mitt will compliment the other mitts, pot holders, and trivets in your personal kitchen or backyard grill.
Since asbestos is illegal, the design of these gloves are dictated by the properties of silicone.
The large thumb makes it difficult to use as one (1) glove for picking up small objects. The thumb can pick up dead crabs, dead lobsters, corn on the cob; basically anything large and floating in a boiling liquid. It also works great with large, easy to grip cookware handles such as many OXO products.
Two (2) are perfect for lifting any pot or pan without handles.
With cookware, it is easier to use two (2) of these like waterproof towels. Unlike towels, the end of these silicone mitts have ridges that grip the side of slick surfaces like glass, ceramic, metal, shell, etc; even when the surface is wet. While not designed for delicate tasks, the thumb can still get in the way of some pans. If you are using a roasting pan and need the thumbs out of the way, just fold them back along the palm and tie them with twine. When you are done just untie the twine. Do not cut the twine, or you may cut the silicone and ruin the glove.
Silicone, even at 500 degrees Fahrenheit, takes a while to warm up. However, silicone warms up faster than asbestos, so these are not recommended for constant use, like a factory kitchen. If you need to cool them quickly, just drop them in cold water for a few minutes, dump out the water inside, and go back to using them.
Silicone also has less tensile strength than asbestos. Do not cut or puncture these mitts. While silicone is squishy and has a slight resistance to cutting or puncturing, once cut, torn or pierced, the damage quickly spreads.
While they have a built in hole for hanging, the thickness and rigidity of silicone required, makes these impossible to fold into tiny squares and stash in a drawer.
Considering the amount of silicone, these mitts are reasonable priced, but depending on your budget and kitchen they may not be right for you.
The 17" size are great for reaching into a hot oven or barbeque grill.

WoW!, October 5, 2006
I have to say this item is just incredible. I have grabbed cast iron grills straight off the burners at high heat, Corningware and Pyrex cookware right out of the oven at over 400 degrees and I don't even feel the heat through the glove, I've even carried items from the oven all the way to the dining room table without any problems. (I was very cautious at 1st to avoid burns and I am still very careful, I recommend the same.) The only drawback to this item is it is a mitt not a glove, so it can be a bit clumsy and you have to make sure you get a good grip on items but the ridges help greatly with that as well. Easily better than any oven mitt, glove, towel etc. I have ever used to transfer items from a hot stove, grill, etc. to another location. This item is worth every penny!
