Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8?Two titles in a series that attempts to introduce the principal artists, writers, and composers of a specific century through three-to-four page, heavily illustrated biographical sketches. Overviews introduce the major trends of the eras. The individuals are presented in chronological order within each category. The importance of these figures and their influence then and now are conveyed with a minimum of hyperbole. Samples of the artists' works are included; at least one of a writer's significant works is described in some detail. Each chapter is accompanied by a chronology of major works and a portrait of the subject. Both books have an appealing format, enhanced by a somewhat larger-than-usual typeface. The problem here comes not in the information presented, but rather in what has been left out. The focus is on Europe, particularly Italy, France, and England, although there is some minimal representation from America. Each volume contains a biography of one woman, but no non-white people are represented, and both titles are heavily weighted toward visual artists. In The 17th Century, only one composer (Monteverdi) and three writers, all English, are included. There is no information about criteria for inclusion. Despite the mentioned shortcomings, these books are worthy of consideration for the highly accessible information they do provide.?Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City
