OK GO: OF THE BLUE COLOUR OF THE SKY
produced by Dave Fridmann
bio by Ira Glass

Okay, let’s just get this part out of the way. Most people know OK Go from their videos, especially those treadmills. Any video that’s well enough known to be parodied on The Simpsons is a cultural force in itself and, checking the YouTube rating right before sitting down to write this, I ... Editorial Reviews

Already well-loved for their three albums, YouTube mega-videos and ecstatic concert tours, OK Gos new 180/365 presents their latest breakthrough.
The first album to be wholly released by the bands newly established Paracadute label, the 15-song, 58-minute live collection reinforces the Los Angeles based quartets status as a bleeding edge, blockbuster outfit for the internet age. But just as much, 180/365 burnishes the reputation behind the reputation: a ceaselessly touring live act, refined into extra-psychic tightness by years on the road. Performing for well over a half-million fans during 180 shows through the course of 2010 - gigs that saw confetti explosions, marching bands, handbell arrangements, in-crowd performances, and other unpredictable joy - 180/365 boils OK Go to their ass-kicking, cant-miss essence.
Mixed by producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT), the 15 multi-track recordings will arrive housed in another first: the gorgeous Tronpak, a unique and environmentally friendly eco-packaging direct from Norway. Packed with rare and unseen photos, 180/365 is a must-have testament to the endless possibilities of the blue skies ahead.

You get a nice level of some deviation from their album versions, a great audio recording for a live performance, and just a ton of energy.

At times, some of these random unknowns do not turn out to be good through-out, but this one is very consistent and totally listenable.

I'm not a big fan of live albums, because too many bands can't live up to their recordings one way or another. I have a few I love, but it's a small handful.

I saw one of the shows on this tour (not one of those included). It was not one of the best venues. It was in the kind of small town small bar with a postage stamp stage that has to be a challenge for any band. I have no idea how they did it, but the sound quality was incredible, the performances were riveting, and the energy was through the roof. I've never seen or heard a finer or more ecstatic rock show.

This album more than lives up to that experience.

This is obviously a compilation from many performances, but if it weren't for the shout-outs to different cities, that would be easy to forget, in part because the tracks are so closely edited together it's nearly seamless. If you like Ok Go, or you just love live rock music, you will love this.

This album is on heavy rotation both in my car and on my workout mix. I love it, my kids sing along with it (!); this is one of the few live albums that perhaps outshines the studio versions of the same material. Worth it at twice the price.

I agree with the OP that I normally do not like live albums because often times bands are so jacked up in the studio versions that they don't sound like themselves live. Not only is this not true for Ok Go, but the band is fun to listen to and having never yet seen them live, I felt like I was at a concert.

The music selections are fabulous and the band is flawless. If you are a fan, get this album. If you are not a fan yet, be one and get this album.

Let's face it: live albums are usually not worth buying. At best you tend to get a collection of songs that sound similar to, but not quite as good as, the studio versions. And they're punctuated by segments of generic applause that seem to last longer than the songs themselves.

180/365 is not like that at all. OK Go brings something new to the songs in their live performances. Instead of being simply less polished than the studio versions, they're different. The audience participation parts are fun and make me wish I were there, and they add to the songs rather than obscuring them. Some songs I like better in the studio version (In the Glass is more haunting in the studio), and some better in the live version (Needing/Getting has more raw energy live). And the live version of Skyscrapers blows me away.

As a plus, the applause between songs is short and not drawn-out. Obviously, OK Go trusts that we know the audience loved the songs.
