This review is from: 180 Essential Vocabulary Words for 6th Grade: Independent Learning Packets That Help Students Learn the Most Important Words They Need to Succeed in School (Paperback)
This book could have been so much better. The concept behind the book is terrific and the selected words are grouped by content area. However, strong students really do not need this kind of book and lower achieving students will find it too confusing and/or difficult. Many of the definitions for the words do not provide a clear, simple definition of the word. A simple definition and then an illustrative e.g. would have been so much better. I found that I needed to rewrite many of the definitions so that they would be helpful for my son. For e.g., here is how "application" was defined: "When you apply to a school, you fill out an application." So I had to add in a definition that an "application is a paper or form you are asked to fill out to be allowed to do something". Next, the accompanying activities are not very good nor are they ordered properly. The first activity is often too difficult. I have another vocabulary book where the exercises start out simple and then become increasingly difficult, which makes much more sense. Busy parents need to be able to open up a resource and get started, without having to fiddle around with the content. This is not a user-friendly resource. I hope they can improve the product.
