5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! July 13, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
For a 1955 recording, the sound is unheard of, and it's probably as good as most made today. The performances are just as impressive. Everybody has heard the 1812 Overture, but if you haven't heard this one, you've got to. I was amazed when the finale finished. I don't think I've ever heard a brass section in an orchestra play like that! It's so loud, and so flawless. Unbelievable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best Pathetique September 16, 2007
Format:Audio CD
After a half century the Reiner/CSO recording of the Sixth Symphony remains unsurpassed both musically and sonically: opulent string sound, stunning precision, incredibly transparent detail, masterly control.

3.0 out of 5 stars 1812 Overture with cuts and without cannons! May 19, 2006
Format:Audio CD
A couple of warnings for those of you who might be considering buying this CD for Reiner's recording of the 1812 Overture. First, there is a massive cut in the middle of the overture. Reiner cuts the three-minute "development" right out from the middle of the piece. So, if you're looking for the complete overture, look elsewhere. Second, there are no cannons. Reiner doesn't even use the (very prominent and well-recorded) bass drum as a substitute. There is nothing, which is disappointing (especially since, in other respects, the performance is terrific).

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the great Tchaikovsky 6th's!!! October 24, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is probably the best 6th next to the slightly better Karajan BPO from the late 70's on the DG label. The Chicago symphony plays with stunning precision and great warmth in this particular version. Don't hesitate in buying this gem of a performance!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars No Cannon June 8, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
No cannon... Reiner deserves some cannon; however, I bought this for the 'Pathetique,' which was very well done. The '1812' was just a kind of bonus... a surprisingly (for something so overdone-- in both senses) good bonus, but without explosions... without explosions, it seems like so much goodness, so much power was wasted.

Reiner, Tchaikovsky 6th Symphony
I bought Reiner's Tch #6th in 1957 and have always appreciated the performance. When the orchestra explodes in the development section of the 1st movement, the trumpets punctuate the orchestral tutti like lightening bolts. The whole performance is proportional, dramatic, emotional, and musical.... Read More
