Owning a house I am constantly fixing something. I use a lot of this Dap Dynaflex 230 premium indoor/outdoor sealant. This product is nice to have around as it dries clear and so it goes with almost any repair on any color. It is even paintable. This product makes a flexible waterproof seal that is also crack-proof. It is good to seal out water or air leaks around doors or windows.

The product is mold and mildew resistant. I even use it to seal out spots where insects like hornets can get into small holes to build nests.

I have had it shrink quite a bit and I deducted one star for that issue. It just makes me seal some larger areas more than once.

I'm not sure why other reviewers are ragging on it... It is what it says, a MIXTURE of latex and silicone. I've just gone through a few tubes of it, and it works quite well. It appears to have the best attributes of both latex caulk and of silicone - it stays flexible when dry, but is actually paintable. They claim 50 years for durability. No way to test that, but the stuff I applied three years ago is not cracking the way cheap latex caulk sometimes does. This is great for windows and doors where you want to paint over it. Not really recommended for tubs and showers - use 100% silicone. As to price, it is a bout $1 more here than I paid at a major chain home improvement store.

I have been using caulk for a long, long time and I can honestly say this was the worst experience I have ever had. It was used to seal a window. First off, minimum set up time is 7-14 days, (despite DAP online instructions stating it sets within hours) ridiculous. After that, it is supposed to remain somewhat flexible like silicone, it does not. It is gummy and easily punctured with indents appearing randomly even after your smooth bead has begun to dry weeks later. Second, it shrinks more than any other caulk I have used. Supposedly the clear shrinks more than the other colors, but I would never use it again anyway so I don't know. What I do know is that it sets into a thin, and I mean ultra thin layer that is very difficult to get scrape off, which you will most likely do once you see how much it shrinks. I even set up a dehumidifier to help the curing since it was used for a basement window. (Two of the uses written DIRECTLY on the tube). The instructions on DAP's site are incorrect about set up time, so I have read of people getting refunds do to this. That still doesn't pay me for my time of having to remove this junk and start over with another caulk.

I have purchased and used both the DAP clear sealant and this DAP white sealant regularly around my house for a variety of tasks, indoor and out. The white works as well as the clear and seals very well, is flexible waterproof, crack-proof and paintable. DAP is also mold and mildew resistant. The white coloring blends well into white surfaces with the need for painting.

I have never had it shrink, the most important thing to remember is to use it generously enough to fill the gap that you are trying to seal up.

DAP works well but can be found cheaper than the 6 dollars here (around 4 bucks) at the major home improvement box stores.

What's the difference between this and other "Alex" and other "230" caulks made by DAP?

...Possibly very little. May have to do with the amount of silicone contained in each.

I understand (maybe incorrectly) that "230" grade implies 50-yr. durability - which in itself is a joke.

I'm a homeowner, and have been using the white Alex Ultra 230 stuff (available from Lowe's at about 4 bucks a pop as of this writing) outside on my house on some projects since early Spring up to now, and I really like it because I'm fussy and can work it for a long time before it starts to gel.

It obviously is mostly latex with some silicone (doesn't say on the tube), and has a 50-yr. guarantee (DAP seems to be pretty proud of the stuff).

This particular version is very watery, and takes several days to properly cure (in the summer heat) before painting is advisable. Paint it too early, and you have a royal mess on your hands. That "2-4 hour" claim is another joke.

It shrinks like crazy as well. I've reapplied in places to get full, complete coverage. The nature of the beast - that moisture has to go somewhere, and when it does, you got shrinkage.

But...again I personally like this watery stuff (whatever the version or brand) because I can really smooth it out and force it into a long crack with my fingertip and make it neat without it gelling up on me so fast (from the silicone content) and making a mess. I can go back and rework areas.

I have the luxury as a homeowner of doing this - of really taking my time and working this stuff into cracks and of waiting on it to fully cure before painting. You may not be into that drill.

But get this - if you apply ANY caulk over dirt, it AIN'T GONNA STICK LONG TERM!

Just used up our third tube of Dap Dynaflex. Awesome stuff! Re caulking the outside of our windows. Cooler weather snuck up on us and we worried the caulk would not cure. So far only one small spot cracked and we will redo it this weekend. Caulk is thicker and easy to use. Cleanup is as easy as all of the other Dap products. Will continue to buy this brand. Do not waste your money on the cheaper Dap products you can buy in a dollar store. A total waste. Spend a little more and get an exceptional product.
