So many fun slices of life for me to peek into. I confess, I am not a huge reader nor do I consider my brain to be on the "macro" side, but 188 is perfect for me to pick up and use as a quick escape in my busy life. I considered only rating this a 4 star just because I am dying to find out more about some of these characters and I can only hope that someday the author will grab some of these interesting stories and do a follow-up book called 1,888 (or something). I definitely can't complain, however, as I am only half-way through reading the book and have so much more to look forward to! Finally, I got to give mad props to Mo Simpson for the cover art, it is what caught my eye and persuaded me to give this little gem a whirl, and I'm glad I did. The download for Kindle app is free and it looks fantastic on my iPad. I hope to see more like this from the mind of Andrew Flynn. Thank you sir!

As Hemingway put it, every true story ends in death, so a lot hangs on where an author chooses to begin and end. 188: Micro-Stories for Your Macro-Brain plays with this idea in an almost mathematical way, crafting 188 stories limited to 188 words, dropping in and out of very specific moments in the narrative. This creates an effect reminiscent of the epitaphs in Spoon River Anthology, of getting a very partial and even arbitrary window into the complexity of any human life. The vignettes cover a wide range, from the domestic drama of “Penelope & Jasmine” to the tragic finality of “Impairment,” with my favorite being the compressed romantic comedy of “In the Neighborhood.” The stories are satisfying in themselves but the cumulative effect of weaving in and out of so many different narratives is even more pronounced.

I bought this expecting something totally different than what I got, and what I got was a whole lot of freeking amazement that someone could pull this off. I am like a child at holiday time now - I want more, dammit!!!! I can't believe he did what he did - I can't even form a complete sentence enough to tell you how much I loved this. Absolutely brilliant!!

Most books have one story, some have a handful of short stories or novellas in one book, but 188 Micro-Stories for your Macro-Brain has 188 stories in 1 book! Yes, 188, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. Andrew Flynn is a writer that's put a clear understanding of human emotion and psyche into his stories. Spread out over the period of a day each story leads the reader through what that character experiences during the course of their day. Some face terrible odds against them, others face tasks with an uncertain outcome, and others have a happy ending. You never know how each of the stories will end until you reach the end of their journey with them. Once I started reading I had to finish to find out what happens to all the characters. Never knew so many stories could be put in one book with such a wide range of emotions and scenarios. Can't wait to read Andrew's next book.

I don't think I've ever read a book like this, every story brings forth a different and real emotion to the reader with relatable situations, dark humor, and all the good feelings we can feel- all within 188 stories.
