Morgan dollars were minted from 1878 to 1904 and again for one year in 1921. Following the huge Comstock Lode silver discovery in Nevada, mining interests prevailed upon Congress to pass in 1878 the Bland-Allison Act, requiring the Treasury Department to purchase silver to use as coinage.
