I purchased this as my Macbook did not have the capability to burn DVDs. This drive not only burns DVDs but dual layer discs to boot, and the Lightscribe is fantastic for making professional looking discs. The software that comes with the unit is not Mac compatible and I have not yet installed it on my Windows XP machine, so I can't speak to the quality of it. But the drive itself is great. I simply plugged it into my Mac and iMovie, iTunes, etc automatically recognized it and it's capabilities. For the Lightscribe to work you'll need an application, and LaCie offers a free one on their website. They even have a free Linux version too, unbelievable.

EDIT: The unit just died. 18 months is pretty pitiful if you ask me. Anyway, up until that moment I was satisfied but now it's a paper weight.

I have had this external Samsung DVD burner for over 6 months, Very happy with this burner, it is fast, no errors on dvd's, I can switch this portable drive on any of my systems without any problems. Got it for a good price thanks to Amazon.

This product is easy to set up with ur pc. Burns dvds really fast and silenty. Pretty much does what it says!!! Love the product

First off, download your own burning software. Nero is not the most user friendly thing in the world, and the full blown version of Nero 8 is INSANELY expensive. If you just want the basic "burn and rip" features, there are things you can download for free that'll do that. I have been having problems with burning DVDs, but I do believe that is the DVDs problem and not the burner (with all software mind you). Having Lightscribe is a plus, it's neat to be able to burn labels into your CDs and DVDs.

I purchased this item with the intentions of plugging it into my computer and then using it. And it did just that. All very simple to use, and software is very user friendly. The unit looks sleek and runs silent. I recommend this component to anyone that needs to backup large files / or burn DVD movies but is not fortunate enough to have a DVD-+R Rom built into their system. Two Thumbs Up!!

Simply great no complains what so ever. Worked from the moment I got it out of the box and connected to my pc. Really pleased with and great price.

This never worked... I'm not sure if it is me, a software issue, or the burner, but it never worked.

I BOUGHT A CD BURNER THROUGH AMAZON BUT THE MACHINE IS NOT WORKING AT ALL SO I HAVE WASTED A LOT OF TIME BY TRYING TO BUY A CHEAP PRODUCT SO MY RECOMMENDATION TO EVERYBODY IS NOT TO BUY USED ARTICLES.

This drive works great and looks great. I can't believe how cheap it was!!

I recently purchased the Samsung DVD RW 18x unit from GOGOFAN..It was DOA. It took me several weeks to receive an RMA in order to return it ($10.00 additional cost on top of the $60.00 I spent for the drive).Finally I did receive a $40.00 credit from GOGOFAN, but I'm still out $30.00 for the experience. I was happy with Samsung products in the past, and a 10% failure rate is usually an industry accepted amount. However, GOGOFAN as left me with a bad taste, and I'll not purchase anything from them again. As for Samsung, the jury is still out. They have been reliable in the past, and I wouldn't want to hold GOGOFAN against them.
