I love this board. It is made from beautiful solid walnut and wood inlays; even the stones and cups are made of wood. It doesn't have any ugly clasps; instead it is held closed with two small magnets. It probably won't stay closed if dropped (gasp!) or bumped hard, but you shouldn't treat such a nice board that way anyhow. :)

My previous set was padded cloth and felt, so I was worried about the dice knocking the stones all over. No problem. After dozens of games, I have found the dice rarely get near the stones. The playing surface is huge and the stones are pretty big, so they really stay put nicely.

This board is big. Really big! It is 19" x 24" when opened up. You will want to use this board on a stable, solid table or the floor. If you're looking for something that will work in a car or in bed, then this board is probably not right for you.

Each player gets their own set of dice that match their stone color. The dice and doubling cube are NOT wood (which is a good thing), and they have nicely rounded corners. The dice are beautifully balanced and frequently spin on a corner when thrown. There is a felt liner around the inside of both playing areas which makes it nice to throw the dice against.

The ONLY complaint I have is the dark points are made from zebra wood which is too close to the walnut background. It is a minor complaint, but the picture shows the points as very dark and that's just not the way it is.

The craftsmanship is good, but not excellent. The corners have some microscopic gaps that only a woodworker like me would notice. The playing surface should probably have been varnished, but it wasn't. Some minor scratches have appeared from sliding the stones around, but, hey, that gives it character, right?

In all, I'm very happy with this board, and I think you will be too.

This backgammon set is beautiful. I bought it as a presant. I and the recipiant were very pleased with the quality of the product. This is a set that should last a lifetime and could be handed down to the children.
