5.0 out of 5 stars A Step Back in History
This is a fun book to browse if you are a history buff. Full of surprising things modern people never dreamed existed. This catalog gives insight into the lives Grandparents and Great Grandparents lead and the tasks our ancestors faced before the laptop and internet - - - or most other things we take for granted today. In 1902 Radio was cutting edge and the first...

1.0 out of 5 stars Hey, This isn't a complete catalogue!
Nice "sampling" of the 1902 Sears Catalogue BUT the original has over 1162 pages and this "Facsimile Of The 1902 Edition" has only a little over 700 pages. So what's that mean?
Well, the folks @ Gramercy Books who reprinted it kept what THEY thought would be quote "the continuity and the flavor of the original" and then "we have omitted those pages" which (THEY...

Nice "sampling" of the 1902 Sears Catalogue BUT the original has over 1162 pages and this "Facsimile Of The 1902 Edition" has only a little over 700 pages. So what's that mean?
Well, the folks @ Gramercy Books who reprinted it kept what THEY thought would be quote "the continuity and the flavor of the original" and then "we have omitted those pages" which (THEY thought) weren't needed.
If your getting the book to take a fun peak at 1902 items for sale , it's OK . You probably won't even notice that lots of pages are are missing.
But you will be sorely disappointed if you are looking to find that rare old item that is offered in the actual index, cause likely the folks at Gramercy cut those pages out. The editors kept a lot of womens fashion pages, wallpapers and lace, and even a small section on the old firearms.
But things like large sections on the old steam & gas engines are missing. Old electrical items ....gone. I guess that the editors thought the average reader would be more interested in a "taste" of the thousands of fantastic items offered in the original version.
If your into a "sampling" of the real catalogue, this is OK. If you were expecting the COMPLETE catalogue it is NOT and it is pretty hit-and-miss if you will find the old advertisment you may be looking for.

This catalog gives insight into the lives Grandparents and Great Grandparents lead and the tasks our ancestors faced before the laptop and internet - - - or most other things we take for granted today. In 1902 Radio was cutting edge and the first successful transatlantic radiotelegraph message was sent in 1902. Just a lot of fun to look at the pictures and read the claims for the products.

This is an abridged copy of the original. For what I needed a complete edition would have been better. It was however; useful in that it showed items that were used in the late 19th century and would be helpful for reenactor's of that time period.
