This facsimile of the original document is dated June 11, 1912, just one day after the axe murders of the six-member Josiah B. Moore family and two Stillinger girls were discovered in a small white house at 508 East Second Street in Villisca, Iowa. The text includes vivid descriptions of the bizarre crime scene and insight into early theories about the tragedy from officials, neighbors, doctors, friends, and family members of the victims. Fourteen witnesses testified including Dr. Clark Cooper, Marshal Hank Horton, Ed Landers, Ross Moore, Fen Moore, Jessie Moore, Harry Moore, Charles Moore, Mary Peckham, Ed Selley, Blanche Stillinger, Joe Stillinger, Lee Van Gilder, and Dr. Frank Williams. As historian Dr. Edgar V. Epperly says in his introduction, "The Inquest transcript is compelling to read and certainly the starting point for anyone who would truly understand the Villisca axe murders." The Inquest is Illustrated with 16 historical photographs. Page images are reduced from their original size to 8.5" x 11". As a facsimile of the original transcript, this reproduction contains various visual artifacts associated with early 1900s typewriters and some hand-written corrections and other notations are present.
