5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie Condon: Volume 1, December 28, 2005

This review is from: 1927-38 (Audio CD)

The initial offering on Eddie Condon in the Chronological Classics series. It includes a handful of single-disc sessions for Okeh, Victor, and Parlophone, the last named label the first under his own name and containing a terrific version of INDIANA with Joe Sullivan on piano and the legendary Frank Teschemacher on clarinet.

Fuller recording sessions for Eddie began in 1933 for Brunswick. Two takes of Bud Freeman's classic THE EEL (one issued in the US, the other in England) come from the Brunswick dates; both takes are excellent and it's impossible to choose between them. His first Commodore session is included, with the beautiful Bobby Hacket on cornet and the unique Pee Wee Russell on clarinet, especially fine on LOVE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. A great CD, filled with wonderful examples of small-group swing recordings. Worth a spot in everyone's jazz library.
