Sheer heaven for the 1930's-era Anglophile!,

This review is from: The 1930s Scrapbook (Scrapbook S.) (Hardcover)
A visual feast.... Page after image-packed page of popular British culture from the decade between the Roaring 20's and the start of World War II.The over-size format showcases beautifully preserved artifacts (mostly paper) from Robert Opie's enviable collection. The "Modern" home; glamorous ladies' gowns; newly-affordable autos, ocean cruises and labor-saving home appliances are some of the many aspects of British life illustrated. Photo collages fill every page; combining advertisements, product packages, comic books, brochures, and newspapers. Short sections of accompanying text provide background details and timeline information. A fantastic record of the decade for history, popular culture and "Brit" enthusiasts!

I purchased this for my Grandma for her upcoming 80th birthday; I received today and flipped through just to see what the book was about and I was a little disappointed to see that the book revolves around British culture. I didn't see anywhere in the description this was the case. Only when I go back and read some of the reviews do I see this is called out. The other point would be that the font used to provide descriptions is very hard to read. I can imagine my grandma will have difficulty reading.
Overall the book is beautiful but I wish I would have know it was more on British culture.

I bought this for a friend's grandmother. She is from the U.S and she's around 80. She said she didn't remember a whole lot of things that were in the book but she certainly enjoyed looking through it. In fact, she kept picking it back up while the others opened their Chrismtas presents and her daughter had to ask her to put it down and participate with the family!

I bought this recently for my 80 year old grandmother's birthday and she adored it! She wouldn't stop looking through it and telling stories to open the rest of her gifts. Despite being a fan of retro artwork I had a bit of a hard time appreciating it myself. It seems very geared to those who will remember the things inside. Still, it's an absolutely fantastic gift for anyone old enough to remember the things inside!
My only warning is that all of the pages are collages, not single images. Some of it is very busy and some of it is very small and hard to see properly. For some people, especially those with bad eyesight, this might be off-putting. |
