Other than some accompaniment work with Louis Armstrong in 1933, these are Teddy Wilson's earliest recordings and they find him in his purest form. The solos on this album reflect what he would be known for all through his career: impeccable rhythm, a light touch with the right hand, and a swinging style that any song could be adapted to. They are just gems to be treasured and are as lively today as they were when cut. In contrast to Scott Yanow, I have to say that the solos are noticeably freer and looser than would show up even five years later in the notable work recorded in 1940. His work with Billie Holiday on this album, so early in both their careers, reflects why Teddy became probably the best vocal accompanist that the jazz world has yet discovered.
