SHE COULD DANCE, AND SING, AND PLAY THE TRUMPET, January 12, 2010
This review is from: 1935-1947 Volume 1 (Audio CD)
There's an old saying that a prophet is without honour in his own country. That's certainly true of Valaida Snow, who despite being born in Tennessee in mid-1904, did not record until 1935 in London. The original Parlophone 78s turn up but rarely, and a find is usually confined to the first one issued, that is "I Wish I were Twins" and "I Can't Dance". The latter title a misnomer, because she was an accomplished dancer, singer and trumpeter.
Her entire British output of 30 titles was issued many years ago on two World Record Club LPs, and this first Halcyon CD presents the first twentyone, including an alternative take. Vocally, she had something of the style of Ethel Waters, and her trumpet playing reflected the influence of Louis Armstrong. Her accompanists varied, but included trumpeters Duncan Whyte, Harry Owen, and Johnny Claes, sax men Harry Hayes, Buddy Featherstonhaugh, Dave Shand, and Freddy Gardner.
Sound quality is excellent, and the package includes a detailed discography and a very comprehensive note by Howard Rye.
