This review is from: 1936-40 (Audio CD)
I was delighted to learn that Lil Hardin Armstrong, best known as a pianist with the King Oliver Creole Jazzband and the wife of Louis Armstrong, was also a dynamic bandleader and vocalist. Her high-energy, swinging vocals are accompanied by an excellent band that includes Chu Berry and Jonah Jones. Many of the songs on this CD are her own compositions. The recordings range in character from sultry-sentimental (Bluer Than Blue) to hot and wild (It's Murder) to mysterious and ominous (Knock-Kneed Sal on the Mourner's Bench). Altogether, this is a very enjoyable collection.
