"The Complete Chronological Teddy Wilson: 1938"
(Classics-France, 1990)
-------------------------------------------------------
Part of the superb chronological jazz series by the French reissue label, Classics. This is one of several fine collections of vintage material by Teddy Wilson, one of the finest pianists of the American swing scene, and it's all lovely stuff.
Teddy Wilson was one of the featured accompanists on many legendary Billie Holiday sessions, and the second half of this album (tracks 13-22) includes her vocals (and may overlap other Holiday material that you already have, although this particular volume contains mostly less well-known Holiday recordings, so it's less likely to duplicate most best-of Holiday sets...) Also included are a half-dozen delightful piano solos, with Wilson's trademark light touch and melodic bounce; there are also five tracks featuring vocalist Nan Wynn, an obscure but pleasant big band singer. These recordings are easily worth the price -- really, anything by Teddy Wilson in the 1930s is pure gold. Highly recommended! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Music Guide)
