Product Description

These 1 and 2 franc coins were issued for the Vichy French State during World War II. The reverse legend on these coins reads "Work, Family, Fatherland" instead of the "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity" legend on other French coins. In June 1940, the German Army occupied Paris. Henri-Philippe Petain, the new French premier negotiated an armistice with Hitler. The terms of the armistice divided France into occupied and unoccupied zones. Other terms included the surrender of all Jews living in France to the Germans, French soldiers captured by the Germans were to remain prisoners of war, and the Vichy government was to instruct its citizens not to fight the Germans. The unoccupied section of the country was administered by the French government at Vichy under Petain. The Vichy government was widely considered a tool of the Nazis and was never recognized by the Allies. In 1945 the leaders of the Vichy government were arrested and some were executed for war crimes.
