It was a historic year. Jackie Robinson made his major league debut, Leo Durocher was suspended for the season, and the Burns of Brooklyn won the pennant to face the Yankees in the World Series. And never was the rivalry between the Dodgers and the Yankees so bitter. The Series proved to be even more exciting than expected. Every game was a dramatic story all its own--Branca's brilliant performance suddenly shattered, Reynolds' blowout, Berra's historic pinch-hit homer, Lavagetto's hit to break up Beven's no-hitter, DiMaggio's clutch homer, Gionfriddo's catch, and the heroics of Page and Henrich. The Yankees had regained their dynasty, and in five out of the next six years they would become world champions. As for the '47 Series, while Bevens, Lavagetto, and Gionfriddo played starring roles, none of them ever played in another major league game.
