5.0 out of 5 stars End of an Era, April 7, 2011
This review is from: 1949-1951 (Audio CD)
These are the last songs recorded by Gene Krupa as a full-time bandleader. The Cd starts out with the final Columbia recordings Krupa made during his Bebop period. Krupa then jumped to RCA Victor in March, 1950. The band sounds good although it's biggest star, Roy Eldridge, had left to tour Europe with Benny Goodman. By 1950 there was a changing trend at the time. Major performing artists began to dismiss their frantic Bebop arrangements for something a little more conservative. Gene Krupa also followed this trend by recording an album of Fats Waller favorites, and he also came up with a red hot small group that played Chicago Jazz, which included a Cowboy singer(!) Hot cornetist Wild Bill Davison really stands out on all these tracks, wow! Bonaparte's Retreat would turn out to be a big hit for them.
